The Interaction between Feudal Family Ethics and Female Tragedy in Modern Chinese Theatre: An Example from Cao Yu’s Thunderstorm

In today’s society, with the change of social structure and values, women’s issues have become a hot topic in society. The situation of women in different eras is closely linked to family ethics in the current social context. Cao Yu’s classic play Thunderstorm profoundly reveals the repression and distortion of human nature by feudal family ethics, especially the far-reaching impact on the fate of women. This paper uses the literature method, text method and comparative research method to explore the interaction between feudal family ethics and female tragedy in modern Chinese theatre by combing through the relevant literature and comparing the different types of female tragedy in it with the specific plot of Thunderstorm . The study has found that in the context of feudal society, family ethics restricted women’s freedom and rights, leading to tragedies in love, marriage and many other aspects. Female tragedy in turn has impacts on family ethics, triggering reflection on family ethics and social morality and promoting their change. The purpose of this paper is to explore the interaction between feudal family ethics and female tragedy and to provide insights for addressing women’s and gender issues in modern society.

Zinc batteries have received intense attentions but suffer from inferior low-temperature performance. Here, the authors constructed a gradient phosphatized interphase in situ on zinc surface to accelerate zinc-ion desolvation and transport, greatly enhancing the cycling performance at subzero temperatures.

ALI can further develop into serious liver diseases such as cirrhosis and liver cancer. Therefore, how to effectively prevent and treat ALI has become the focus of research. -galactosamine/lipopolysaccharide (D-GalN/LPS) to establish an ALI model, explored the mechanism of liver cells death caused by D-GalN/LPS, and determined the effect of MaR1 on D-GalN/LPS-induced ALI.
In vivo
experiments, we found that MaR1 and ferrostatin-1 significantly alleviated D-GalN/LPS-induced ALI, reduced serum alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase levels, and improved the survival rate of mice. Meanwhile, MaR1 inhibited hepatocyte death, inhibited tissue reactive oxygen species (ROS) expression, reduced malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), GSH/oxidized glutathione (GSSG), and iron content induced by D-GalN/LPS in mice. In addition, MaR1 inhibited ferroptosis-induced liver injury through inhibiting the release of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and IL-6. Subsequently, western blot showed that MaR1 improved the expression of nuclear factor E2-related factor 2(Nrf2)/heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1)/glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4).
In vitro
experiments, we found that MaR1 inhibited LPS-induced and erastin-induced cell viability reduction. Meanwhile, we found that MaR1 increased the MDA and GSH levels in cells. Western blot showed that MaR1 increased the expression level of Nrf2/HO-1/GPX4. Next, the
Nrf2
was knocked down in HepG2 cells, and the results showed that the protective effect of MaR1 significantly decreased. Finally, flow cytometry revealed that MaR1 inhibited ROS production and apoptosis. Overall, our study showed MaR1 inhibited ferroptosis-induced liver injury by inhibiting ROS production and Nrf2/HO-1/GPX4 activation.

Metabolic states greatly influence functioning and differentiation of immune cells. Regulating the metabolism of immune cells can effectively modulate the host immune response. Itaconate, an intermediate metabolite derived from the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle of immune cells, is produced through the decarboxylation of cis-aconitate by cis-aconitate decarboxylase in the mitochondria. The gene encoding cis-aconitate decarboxylase is known as immune response gene 1 (
IRG1
). In response to external proinflammatory stimulation, macrophages exhibit high IRG1 expression. IRG1/itaconate inhibits succinate dehydrogenase activity, thus influencing the metabolic status of macrophages. Therefore, itaconate serves as a link between macrophage metabolism, oxidative stress, and immune response, ultimately regulating macrophage function. Studies have demonstrated that itaconate acts on various signaling pathways, including Keap1-nuclear factor E2-related factor 2-ARE pathways, ATF3–IκBζ axis, and the stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway to exert antiinflammatory and antioxidant effects. Furthermore, several studies have reported that itaconate affects cancer occurrence and development through diverse signaling pathways. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of the role IRG1/itaconate and its derivatives in the regulation of macrophage metabolism and functions. By furthering our understanding of itaconate, we intend to shed light on its potential for treating inflammatory diseases and offer new insights in this field.

Clinical course and predictors of 60-day mortality in 239 critically ill patients with COVID-19: a multicenter retrospective study from Wuhan, China

Background
The global numbers of confirmed cases and deceased critically ill patients with COVID-19 are increasing. However, the clinical course, and the 60-day mortality and its predictors in critically ill patients have not been fully elucidated. The aim of this study is to identify the clinical course, and 60-day mortality and its predictors in critically ill patients with COVID-19.
Methods
Critically ill adult patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) from 3 hospitals in Wuhan, China, were included. Data on demographic information, preexisting comorbidities, laboratory findings at ICU admission, treatments, clinical outcomes, and results of SARS-CoV-2 RNA tests and of serum SARS-CoV-2 IgM were collected including the duration between symptom onset and negative conversion of SARS-CoV-2 RNA.
Results
Of 1748 patients with COVID-19, 239 (13.7%) critically ill patients were included. Complications included acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in 164 (68.6%) patients, coagulopathy in 150 (62.7%) patients, acute cardiac injury in 103 (43.1%) patients, and acute kidney injury (AKI) in 119 (49.8%) patients, which occurred 15.5 days, 17 days, 18.5 days, and 19 days after the symptom onset, respectively. The median duration of the negative conversion of SARS-CoV-2 RNA was 30 (range 6–81) days in 49 critically ill survivors that were identified. A total of 147 (61.5%) patients deceased by 60 days after ICU admission. The median duration between ICU admission and decease was 12 (range 3–36). Cox proportional-hazards regression analysis revealed that age older than 65 years, thrombocytopenia at ICU admission, ARDS, and AKI independently predicted the 60-day mortality.
Conclusions
Severe complications are common and the 60-day mortality of critically ill patients with COVID-19 is considerably high. The duration of the negative conversion of SARS-CoV-2 RNA and its association with the severity of critically ill patients with COVID-19 should be seriously considered and further studied.

Helical-caging enables single-emitted large asymmetric full-color circularly polarized luminescence

Colorful circularly polarized luminescence materials are desired for 3D displays, information security and asymmetric synthesis, in which single-emitted materials are ideal owing to self-absorption avoidance, evenly entire-visible-spectrum-covered photon emission and facile device fabrication. However, restricted by the synthesis of chiral broad-luminescent emitters, the realization and application of high-performing single-emitted full-color circularly polarized luminescence is in its infancy. Here, we disclose a single-emitted full-color circularly polarized luminescence system (spiral full-color emission generator), composed of whole-vis-spectrum emissive quantum dots and chiral liquid crystals. The system achieves a maximum luminescence dissymmetry factor of 0.8 and remains an order of 10
−1
in visible region by tuning its photonic bandgap. We then expand it to a series of desired customized-color circularly polarized luminescence, build chiral devices and further demonstrate the working scenario in the photoinduced enantioselective polymerization. This work contributes to the design and synthesis of efficient chiroptical materials, device fabrication and photoinduced asymmetric synthesis.
Circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) is essential for asymmetric synthetic photochemistry. Here, the authors integrate white quantum dots with chiral nematic liquid crystal or liquid crystal polymer to achieve single-emitted tuneable full-colour or white CPL for enantioselective polymerization.

Comparative effects of cognitive and instability resistance training versus instability resistance training on balance and cognition in elderly women

This study investigates the effects of integrated instability resistance training and cognitive training (IRCT) versus isolated instability resistance training (IRT) on balance, gait, muscle strength, and cognitive functions in elderly women.This randomized controlled trial included 36 participants, with 18 in the IRCT group and 18 in the IRT group. The sample size was estimated to achieve a statistical power of 0.95 with a large effect size (0.40; n = 12 each group). The closed-eye single-leg stand test was measured for static balance, the closed-eye stepping test, and the Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT) were measured for dynamic balance. Dual-task balance was assessed by combining the TUGT with cognitive tasks (TUGT-C) and motor tasks (TUGT-M). Gait performance was evaluated using a gait function system. Lower limb muscle strength was measured with the 30-Second Chair Stand Test. Cognitive function was assessed through the Trail Making Test (TMT), Digit Span Test (DST), Stroop Color and Word Test (Stroop), and Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST). Results IRCT group showed better improvements in both cognitive (p < 0.001) and motor (p = 0.812 for baseline; p < 0.001 for post-intervention) dual-task abilities, IRCT also experienced better enhancement in certain cognitive functions, particularly in the TMT (p = 0.001) and DSST (p = 0.022) compared to the IRT group. Both groups demonstrated enhancements in walking abilities as shown on selective markers of the gait performance test (p < 0.05) and leg muscle strength via 30-Second Chair (p < 0.001 for time main effect). These results suggest that combining cognitive exercises with physical training more effectively addresses the complex challenges associated with aging in women. The study highlights the potential of comprehensive training approaches in boosting health and quality of life for the elderly, with implications for developing tailored exercise programs focused on reducing fall risks and enhancing quality of life in this population.

Preoperatively predicting the lymph node metastasis and prognosis for gastric cancer patients

The preoperative distinguishment of lymph nodes (LN) with metastasis plays a pivotal role in guiding the surgical extension for gastric cancer (GC). We aim to identify the preparative risk factors for LN metastasis in GC patients. We retrospectively reviewed 424 patients who underwent radical GC resection in our medical center between Jan 2011 and Dec 2018. Multivariate logistic regression was employed to identify risk factors for LN metastasis, while multivariate COX regression was utilized to evaluate prognostic factors. The median overall survival of patients with or without LN metastases was 31 and 58 months, respectively. In multivariate analysis, lower albumin (OR = 0.512; P = 0.004) and prealbumin (OR = 0.367, P = 0.001) and higher CEA (OR = 3.178, P < 0.001), CA199 (OR = 2.278, P = 0.002) and platelets (OR = 1.697, P = 0.017) were found to be significantly associated with LN metastasis. In survival analysis, older age (HR = 1.712), larger tumors (HR = 1.082), higher D-dimer (HR = 1.561) and CA199 (HR = 1.553), advanced staging (stage II, HR = 3.446; stage III-IV, HR = 11.089), lower prealbumin levels (lower level for reference, HR = 0.63), and absence of adjuvant chemotherapy (HR = 0.396) was discovered to be associated with poorer overall survival (all P < 0.05). In conclusion, our results demonstrated that preoperative prealbumin-bound tumor markers can effectively predict LN metastasis. Additionally, prealbumin was found to possess prognostic value as well.

Growing evidence suggests that alcohol consumption is a risk factor for hearing loss; however, the evidence has been inconsistent. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effect of alcohol consumption on hearing loss.
We searched several databases up to November 2021, for published articles using the keywords \"alcohol drinking\" and \"hearing loss\". Two investigators independently conducted the study selection and data extraction. Based on the results of the heterogeneity analysis (Q statistic and I2 statistic), a fixed- or random-effects model was used to calculate the pooled odds ratios (ORs). Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were performed to assess the potential sources of heterogeneity and robustness of the pooled estimation. Publication bias in the literature was evaluated using Egger's test.
In total, 18 (9 cross-sectional, 5 case-control, and 4 cohort) observational studies were identified in this search; 27,849 participants were included. Compared with non-drinkers, the pooled OR of drinkers was 1.22 (95% confidence interval: 1.09-1.35).
Evidence suggests a positive association between alcohol consumption and hearing loss. Drinkers were at a higher risk than non-drinkers. Drinking limitations may be useful for preventing hearing loss.

Identification of gene signatures associated with lactation for predicting prognosis and treatment response in breast cancer patients through machine learning

As a newly discovered histone modification, abnormal lactation has been found to be present in and contribute to the development of various cancers. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential role between lactylation and the prognosis of breast cancer patients. Lactylation-associated subtypes were obtained by unsupervised consensus clustering analysis. Lactylation-related gene signature (LRS) was constructed by 15 machine learning algorithms, and the relationship between LRS and tumor microenvironment (TME) as well as drug sensitivity was analyzed. In addition, the expression of genes in the LRS in different cells was explored by single-cell analysis and spatial transcriptome. The expression levels of genes in LRS in clinical tissues were verified by RT-PCR. Finally, the potential small-molecule compounds were analyzed by CMap, and the molecular docking model of proteins and small-molecule compounds was constructed. LRS was composed of 6 key genes (SHCBP1, SIM2, VGF, GABRQ, SUSD3, and CLIC6). BC patients in the high LRS group had a poorer prognosis and had a TME that promoted tumor progression. Single-cell analysis and spatial transcriptome revealed differential expression of the key genes in different cells. The results of PCR showed that SHCBP1, SIM2, VGF, GABRQ, and SUSD3 were up-regulated in the cancer tissues, whereas CLIC6 was down-regulated in the cancer tissues. Arachidonyltrifluoromethane, AH-6809, W-13, and clofibrate can be used as potential target drugs for SHCBP1, VGF, GABRQ, and SUSD3, respectively. The gene signature we constructed can well predict the prognosis as well as the treatment response of BC patients. In addition, our predicted small-molecule complexes provide an important reference for personalized treatment of breast cancer patients.
