Project description and crowdfunding success: an exploratory study

Existing research on antecedent of funding success mainly focuses on basic project properties such as funding goal, duration, and project category. In this study, we view the process by which project owners raise funds from backers as a persuasion process through project descriptions. Guided by the unimodel theory of persuasion, this study identifies three exemplary antecedents (length, readability, and tone) from the content of project descriptions and two antecedents (past experience and past expertise) from the trustworthy cue of project descriptions. We then investigate their impacts on funding success. Using data collected from Kickstarter, a popular crowdfunding platform, we find that these antecedents are significantly associated with funding success. Empirical results show that the proposed model that incorporated these antecedents can achieve an accuracy of 73 % (70 % in F-measure). The result represents an improvement of roughly 14 percentage points over the baseline model based on informed guessing and 4 percentage points improvement over the mainstream model based on basic project properties (or 44 % improvement of mainstream’s performance over informed guessing). The proposed model also has superior true positive and true negative rates. We also investigate the timeliness of project data and find that old project data is gradually becoming less relevant and losing predictive power to newly created projects. Overall, this study provides evidence that antecedents identified from project descriptions have incremental predictive power and can help project owners evaluate and improve the likelihood of funding success.

Impact of the host response and osteoblast lineage cells on periodontal disease
2022
Periodontitis involves the loss of connective tissue attachment and alveolar bone. Single cell RNA-seq experiments have provided new insight into how resident cells and infiltrating immune cells function in response to bacterial challenge in periodontal tissues. Periodontal disease is induced by a combined innate and adaptive immune response to bacterial dysbiosis that is initiated by resident cells including epithelial cells and fibroblasts, which recruit immune cells. Chemokines and cytokines stimulate recruitment of osteoclast precursors and osteoclastogenesis in response to TNF, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-17, RANKL and other factors. Inflammation also suppresses coupled bone formation to limit repair of osteolytic lesions. Bone lining cells, osteocytes and periodontal ligament cells play a key role in both processes. The periodontal ligament contains cells that exhibit similarities to tendon cells, osteoblast-lineage cells and mesenchymal stem cells. Bone lining cells consisting of mesenchymal stem cells, osteoprogenitors and osteoblasts are influenced by osteocytes and stimulate formation of osteoclast precursors through MCSF and RANKL, which directly induce osteoclastogenesis. Following bone resorption, factors are released from resorbed bone matrix and by osteoclasts and osteal macrophages that recruit osteoblast precursors to the resorbed bone surface. Osteoblast differentiation and coupled bone formation are regulated by multiple signaling pathways including Wnt, Notch, FGF, IGF-1, BMP, and Hedgehog pathways. Diabetes, cigarette smoking and aging enhance the pathologic processes to increase bone resorption and inhibit coupled bone formation to accelerate bone loss. Other bone pathologies such as rheumatoid arthritis, post-menopausal osteoporosis and bone unloading/disuse also affect osteoblast lineage cells and participate in formation of osteolytic lesions by promoting bone resorption and inhibiting coupled bone formation. Thus, periodontitis involves the activation of an inflammatory response that involves a large number of cells to stimulate bone resorption and limit osseous repair processes.

Lactate regulators contribute to tumor microenvironment and predict prognosis in lung adenocarcinoma

Lactic acid, as a product of glycolysis, increases tumor cell migration and the invasion of tumor cells in the tumor microenvironment. Besides this, lactic acid promotes the expression of programmed death-1 expression (PD-1) in regulatory T cells, which could cause the failure of PD-1 blockade therapy. However, the implications of lactic acid in the tumor microenvironment of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) remain largely unclear.
We performed unsupervised consensus clustering to identify lactic-associated subtypes using expression profile of lactate regulators in LUAD. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with lactic-associated subtypes was used to construct lactate signature (LaSig) using LASSO regression algorithm. Immune infiltration analysis was conducted by ESTIMATER and drug sensitivity was estimated by R package called \"pRRophetic\". The difference between two groups was calculated using Wilcox rank sum test and correlation analysis was calculated using Pearson correlation coefficient.
In this study, we evaluated DNA methylation and the mutation frequency of lactate regulators and found lactate regulators showed low mutation frequency in the TCGA-LUAD cohort, except TP53. At the RNA level, the expression level of lactate regulators was significantly associated with the immune cell component. In particular, expression of LDHA was positively correlated with CD4 T cell, CD8 T cell, M1 macrophages, and the enrichment score of multiple immune pathways. Two clusters were defined using the gene expression level of lactate regulators, and LDHA was significantly upregulated in cluster 1 with poor overall survival. A lactate signature (LaSig) had a robust performance in predicting the survival rate and immunotherapy response of LUAD patients. Moreover, patients in the high LaSig group may be more likely to benefit from these drugs (Cisplatin, Erlotinib, Gemcitabine, and Vinblastine) than those in the low LaSig group.
In summary, our study explores the role of lactate regulators in guiding the clinical treatment of lung adenocarcinoma and provides additional help to supplement traditional molecular subtypes.

Atomic-scale imaging of CH3NH3PbI3 structure and its decomposition pathway

) at the atomic scale. We successfully image the atomic structure of perovskite in real space under ultra-low electron dose condition, and observe a two-step decomposition process, i.e., initial loss of MA
+
followed by the collapse of perovskite structure into 6H-PbI
2
with their critical threshold doses also determined. Interestingly, an intermediate phase (MA
0.5
PbI
3
) with locally ordered vacancies can robustly exist before perovskite collapses, enlightening strategies for prevention and recovery of perovskite structure during the degradation. Associated with the structure evolution, the bandgap gradually increases from ~1.6 eV to ~2.1 eV. In addition, it is found that C-N bonds can be readily destroyed under irradiation, releasing NH
3
and HI and leaving hydrocarbons. These findings enhance our understanding of the photoelectric properties and failure mechanism of MAPbI
3
, providing potential strategies into material optimization.

Giant enhancement of superconducting critical temperature in substitutional alloy (La,Ce)H9

A sharp focus of current research on superconducting superhydrides is to raise their critical temperature T c at moderate pressures. Here, we report a discovery of giant enhancement of T c in CeH 9 obtained via random substitution of half Ce by La, leading to equal-atomic (La,Ce)H 9 alloy stabilized by maximum configurational entropy, containing the LaH 9 unit that is unstable in pure compound form. The synthesized (La,Ce)H 9 alloy exhibits T c of 148–178 K in the pressure range of 97–172 GPa, representing up to 80% enhancement of T c compared to pure CeH 9 and showcasing the highest T c at sub-megabar pressure among the known superhydrides. This work demonstrates substitutional alloying as a highly effective enabling tool for substantially enhancing T c via atypical compositional modulation inside suitably selected host crystal. This optimal substitutional alloying approach opens a promising avenue for synthesis of high-entropy multinary superhydrides that may exhibit further increased T c at even lower pressures.

The gravitational bending of acoustic Schwarzschild black hole

Acoustic black hole is becoming an attractive topic in recent years, for it open-up new direction for experimental/observational explorations of black holes. In this work, the gravitational bending of acoustic Schwarzschild black hole is investigated. The gravitational deflection angle of particles traveling along null geodesics, weak gravitational lensing and Einstein ring for acoustic Schwarzschild black hole are carefully studied and analyzed. Particularly, in the calculation of gravitational deflection angle, we resort to two approaches—the Gauss–Bonnet theorem and the geodesic method. The results show that the gravitational bending effect in acoustic Schwarzschild black hole is enhanced, compared with conventional Schwarzschild black hole. This result indicates that the acoustic black holes may be more easily detectable in gravitational bending effects and weak gravitational lensing observations.

The underappreciated role of agricultural soil nitrogen oxide emissions in ozone pollution regulation in North China

Intensive agricultural activities in the North China Plain (NCP) lead to substantial emissions of nitrogen oxides (NO
x
) from soil, while the role of this source on local severe ozone pollution is unknown. Here we use a mechanistic parameterization of soil NO
x
emissions combined with two atmospheric chemistry models to investigate the issue. We find that the presence of soil NO
x
emissions in the NCP significantly reduces the sensitivity of ozone to anthropogenic emissions. The maximum ozone air quality improvements in July 2017, as can be achieved by controlling all domestic anthropogenic emissions of air pollutants, decrease by 30% due to the presence of soil NO
x
. This effect causes an emission control penalty such that large additional emission reductions are required to achieve ozone regulation targets. As NO
x
emissions from fuel combustion are being controlled, the soil emission penalty would become increasingly prominent and shall be considered in emission control strategies.
Summertime ozone air pollution in North China remains severe. Here the authors find large biogenic emissions of nitrogen oxides in North China, mainly driven by fertilizer application, challenge the mitigation of ozone pollution by only reducing combustion induced ozone precursors’ emissions.

Piezoelectric and pyroelectric effects induced by interface polar symmetry

Interfaces in heterostructures have been a key point of interest in condensed-matter physics for decades owing to a plethora of distinctive phenomena—such as rectification

, the photovoltaic effect

, the quantum Hall effect

and high-temperature superconductivity
4
—and their critical roles in present-day technical devices. However, the symmetry modulation at interfaces and the resultant effects have been largely overlooked. Here we show that a built-in electric field that originates from band bending at heterostructure interfaces induces polar symmetry therein that results in emergent functionalities, including piezoelectricity and pyroelectricity, even though the component materials are centrosymmetric. We study classic interfaces—namely, Schottky junctions—formed by noble metal and centrosymmetric semiconductors, including niobium-doped strontium titanium oxide crystals, niobium-doped titanium dioxide crystals, niobium-doped barium strontium titanium oxide ceramics, and silicon. The built-in electric field in the depletion region induces polar structures in the semiconductors and generates substantial piezoelectric and pyroelectric effects. In particular, the pyroelectric coefficient and figure of merit of the interface are over one order of magnitude larger than those of conventional bulk polar materials. Our study enriches the functionalities of heterostructure interfaces, offering a distinctive approach to realizing energy transduction beyond the conventional limitation imposed by intrinsic symmetry.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) represent a groundbreaking approach to cancer therapy. Inflammatory markers such as the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) have emerged as potential indicators strongly associated with tumor prognosis, albeit their prognostic significance remains contentious. The predictive value of NLR, PLR, LMR in patients with gastric cancer (GC) treated with ICIs has not been fully explored; therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to examine the potential of inflammatory markers NLR, PLR, and LMR as survival predictors in this population.
A comprehensive search was conducted across PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases, with the search cut-off date set as March 2024. Hazard ratios (HR) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated to assess the prognostic significance of NLR, PLR, and LMR for both progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS).
Fifteen cohort studies involving 1336 gastric cancer patients were finally included in this meta-analysis. The results of the meta-analysis showed that high levels of NLR were associated with poorer OS and PFS in GC patients receiving ICIs, with combined HRs of OS [HR=2.01, 95%CI (1.72,2.34), P<0.01], and PFS PFS[HR=1.59, 95%CI (1.37,1.86), P<0.01], respectively; high levels of PLR were associated with poorer OS and PFS, and the combined HR was OS [HR=1.57, 95%CI (1.25,1.96), P<0.01], PFS [HR=1.52,95%CI (1.20, 1.94), P<0.01], respectively; and there was an association between elevated LMR and prolonged OS and PFS, and the combined HR was OS [HR=0.62, 95%CI (0.47,0.81), P<0.01], and PFS [HR=0.69, 95%CI (0.50,0.95), P<0.01].
In gastric cancer (GC) patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), elevated neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were associated with poorer overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), while high lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) was linked to improved OS and PFS. Subgroup analyses suggested that NLR might be particularly pertinent to the prognosis of GC patients. In conclusion, the inflammatory markers NLR, PLR, and LMR serve as effective biomarkers for prognostic assessment in GC patients, offering valuable insights for therapeutic decision-making in the realm of GC immunotherapy. Prospective studies of high quality are eagerly awaited to validate these findings in the future.

The association between physical and sensory function, self-perceived health, and 24-hour activity patterns for older people: A compositional data analysis

Older adults' physical and sensory function and self-perceived health state are associated with their daily health behavior, such as moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), light physical activity (LPA), sedentary behavior (SEB), and sleep duration (SD), though most studies examine these independently, overlooking 24-hour interactions. This study aims to investigate the relationships between physical and sensory function (vision, hearing, activity limitations), self-perceived health and the pattern of 24-hour activity behaviors via compositional data analysis.
A secondary data analysis was conducted on data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe. Compositional data analysis was employed to account for the inherently interdependent nature of these behaviors. Linear regression models were implemented, designating activity behaviors as the dependent variable and sensory/physical function as the independent variable.
The results indicated that vision and hearing showed weaker and nonsignificant associations with activity behaviors. Activity limitations significantly influence health behavior patterns, with no limitations associated with more time in MVPA and less time in SEB and SD. Self-perceived health is significantly positively associated with more MVPA, while inversely associated with SEB and SD.
This study revealed that older adults with limitations in their daily activities showed the most sedentary daily activity pattern. Future research should develop targeted interventions to improve activity behaviors in this population.
