This paper investigates a problematic issue in many texts, particularly literary, that is of rendering hidden pragmatic meanings of idiomatic expressions into the TL. In order to arrive at the best strategy to do so from the perspective of the TL audience, in this case native speakers of English, the researcher provided the targeted audience with multiple translations of a single idiomatic expression, in context, and asked them to choose the best suiting translation from their point of view. Baker's strategies for translating idioms was the framework adopted for this study (Baker, 2018). The findings emphasized the importance of conveying the pragmatic meaning of idiomatic expressions with reservation of the aesthetic elements of the text. They also suggested that pragmatic and cultural highlights, in addition to translation strategies curricula, should be part of translation training programs.

This paper aims at investigating the problems of coherence in the English writings of Saudi male and female students at Albaha University. The study adopted a descriptive analytical approach. A corpus of students' writings (30 scripts) was analyzed adapting an analytical coherence scale developed in the light of Bamberg's (1984) holistic coherence scale and approaches and studies that concern with text coherence in English. The findings of the study showed that the overall mean score of the evaluation of coherence in the students' writings is above average, namely 62.07. The results of the analysis of the study corpus revealed that the problems of coherence in the students' writings are ascribed to the following: 1) students' inability to write an idea-focused text substantiated by relevant and supporting details; 2) impact of Arabic rhetorical traditions in marshaling the details in the text; 3) students' ignorance of the systematic organization of information in the concerned text of writing; 4) students' failure to correctly and appropriately use conjunctions, references and lexical items that link sentences of the text; 5) students' low proficiency in writing well-constructed sentences that express clear ideas. The study concluded with some suggestions to the concerned teachers of English writing, hoping that they address the students' problems in text coherence.

قام الباحث في بداية هذه الدراسة بتعريف مفهوم النص لغة واصطلاحا وما يرتبط به، كخطوة تمهيدية نحو الولوج إلى عالم الدراسات النصية، ثم انتقل البحث في خطوة تالية ليعرض أبرز الأدوات والوسائل التي اعتمد عليها علماء التفسير المتقدمون، بخلفياتهم النحوية أو البلاغية أو غيرها، في تحليلاتهم النصية للقرآن الكريم. حيث لم يغفل البحث الحديث عن أدوات الربط وما لها من أثر في إحداث التماسك والترابط بين أجزاء النص، فتم ابتداء دراسة العطف بنوعيه: عطف الجمل وعطف القصة، مرورا بدراسة الحذف والسياق، وانتهاء بدراسة الإحالة بأنواعها الضميرية، والإشارية، والموصولية. ولم يغفل البحث رفد التنظير بالتطبيق؛ من أجل التوصل إلى تطوير نظرية نصية عربية، متوافقة مع طبيعة لغتنا العربية وليست طارئة عليها؛ رغبة في خدمة دراسة النصوص العربية وعلى رأسها القرآن الكريم.

يهدف البحث المعنون (التضام في نماذج من صحيح الإمام البخاري) إلى إعادة قراءة تراثنا النحوي قراءةً لسانيةً معاصرةً من خلال المصاحبة اللغوية للنص الذي يُعدُّ وحدةً لغوية كبرى في دراسة النصوص وتحليلها، وهو ما يُسمّيه علماء اللغة المحدثون (نحو النص). تكونت الدراسة من مبحثين تحدث الباحث في المبحث الأول بمقدمة تمهيدية عن صحيح البخاري ومنهجه، كما تطرق إلى مفهوم علم اللغة النصي وأهدافه ووسائله، أما في المبحث الثاني، فقد عرف الباحث مفهوم ظاهرة التضام، مبينًا من خلال هذه الظاهرة تحقيق التماسك والانسجام والربط والتلاحم لنماذج من أحاديث النبي صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ في صحيح البخاري، وبيان الأسس والركائز الأساسية للعناصر النصية الرابطة التي اعتمد عليها النبي صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ في أحاديثه. توصل البحث في نتائجه إلى أن المصاحبة اللغوية ظاهرة موجودة في العربية قديما، وذلك من خلال تماسك مكونات النص ووسائل الربط النَّصي؛ كالسبك والحبك والربط والانسجام والضم والنسج والنظم وغيرها.

האליפסה בעברית היא מכשיר לשוני המשמש להשגת קיצור והקלת התקשורת והוא ממלא תפקיד חשוב גם בטקסטים פוליטיים ודתיים ובשפה המדוברת בשיח פוליטי האליפסה משמשת ליצירת עמימות או לשלוט בכיוון המסר מה שמאפשר לדובר להעביר משמעות בעקיפין או להסתיר מידע אסטרטגי כלשהו בטקסטים דתיים משתמשים באליפסה להוספת מימד רוחני המותיר לקורא או למאזין הזדמנות לשקף ולחלץ משמעויות מהקשר מה שמעניק לטקסטים מימד פרשני עמוק יותר. בעברית המדוברת האליפסה בולטת ביותר שכן מילים מיותרות נשמטות על מנת לפשט את הביטוי ולהאיץ את הדיאלוג מה שהופך את השפה לגמישה ויעילה יותר אליפסה לובשת צורות רבות בעברית והיא עשויה לכלול פעלים שמות עצם או אפילו משפטים שלמים בהתאם למטרה ולהקשר סגנון לשוני זה תורם להגברת הלכידות הטקסטואלית ולהשגת מטרות רטוריות המשקפות את כוונות הדובר או הכותב. באופן כללי האליפסיה היוא מכשיר הבעה רב עוצמה שלא רק מצמצם את מספר המילים אלא גם משקף אסטרטגיות תקשורת שונות המשמשות בתחומים פוליטיים דתיים וחברתיים מה שהופך את השפה ליעילה ומדויקת יותר בהעברת רעיונות.

English writing as a productive skill, is the most challenging skill for EFL students. Nowadays, writing cohesive texts is of great importance especially the essay writing. Consequently, this study is concerned with the use of synonymy as one of the lexical cohesive devices in EFL students' essay writing. This study aims at identifying the most frequently used synonyms in Iraqi university students' essay writing. It also aims at investigating the way in which the use of synonyms as a lexical device contributes in building-up a well-built cohesive essay. Twenty male and female/ third-year students in the English Department, College of Education for Humanities, University of Anbar-Iraq were purposively chosen to participate in writing twenty descriptive essays. A qualitative research design was used in data collection using writing task instrument. Thus, data were analyzed qualitatively using content qualitative analysis procedure. Findings revealed that the frequency of synonymy occurrence in the students' essays was more than that of near-synonymy type. It was also indicated that the students used different synonyms and near-synonyms in their essays to achieve the goal of logical cohesion though they have a little knowledge of this type, synonymy, of lexical cohesive devices. It was also revealed that they have problems in the selection of the appropriate synonyms in their writings due to the lack of sufficient vocabulary knowledge.
