Nigerian political parties urge kidnappers to free four journalists
2010
\"It is bad enough that several journalists have been mowed down by unknown gunmen in recent times, without the security agencies being able to unravel any of the dastardly killings. Adding the fear of kidnapping to their (journalists) burden is an unbearable yoke,\" the party said. \"These crimes, especially the abduction of harmless journalists, constitute a bad publicity for Nigeria, and a turn off for investors and tourists. The government must thus act fast and decisively to stem the tide of such acts in the interest of the nation,\" AC said. \"I would like to appeal to the kidnappers to release the journalists immediately,\" [Atiku Abubakar] said

Nigeria: Former vice-president says ruling PDP needs reforms
2010
Earlier, Chairman of the PDP in Yeli Ward, Mr Vitalis Kosa, said [Atiku Abubakar] is a prodigal son that returned home and must therefore be celebrated. He, therefore, urged those protesting in Adamawa State against the former Vice President's action to embrace him in the interest of the party, state, and Nigeria. On the need for internal democracy in the party, Atiku said: \"Given its dominance of the political landscape in this country, if the PDP is able to achieve internal democracy, organize credible elections and adhere to its constitution, and if due process and the rule of law are allowed to reign supreme, it will be easier for Nigeria as a whole to do the same.\" \"The fight for democracy and the rule of law in Nigeria has enriched our laws, strengthened our judiciary and deepened our democracy. Today, no one can be disqualified from contesting elections except by a competent court of law. Today, there is a strong push across the country for reforms because of the abuses that were perpetrated in 2007. Thanks to our struggle, the PDP set up t he Alex Ekwueme committee to ensure reconciliation of aggrieved members and their return to the PDP, as well as the return of the party to the ideals of the original PDP, including a move towards greater openness and internal democracy.

Nigerian ruling party says opposition leaders provoked insurgency in country
2014
\"[Atiku Abubakar]'s statement was collaborated by one of his close associates, Alhaji Lawal Kaita, who in October 2010, while rejecting the emergence of a President from the South, also said, 'the North is determined, if it happens, to make the country ungovernable for President [Goodluck Jonathan] or any other Southerner who finds his way to the seat of power...Even if he uses incumbency power to get his nomination on the platform of the PDP, he would be frustrated out.\" \"We were not surprised when Rivers State Governor, [Rotimi Amaechi] now a leader in the APC, in inciting his followers recently said, 'I came to Bori to prove to you that you don't need to run away from violence. If a man is chasing you with AK-47, you should carry a machine-gun and the man will call for peace.'\"

2007
A source close to the president-elect revealed in [Abuja] yesterday that a number of ministerial slots, ambassadorial posts, some heads of parastatals and board appointments were conceded to the [Atiku Abubakar] camp. The source explained that the concession was to appease the Atiku camp over the perceived rigging of the 21 April elections. It was learnt that the olive branch was communicated to the Atiku camp through a former minister in the Obasanjo administration who is also a mutual friend of both Alhaji Yar'[Adua] and Vice-President Abubakar. The source said: \"The effort on the part of Yar'Adua is to get the Vice President to drop his intended court action against the election result and give support to the Yar'Adua administration. Nobody knows exactly how the vice-president will take it but it is certain that Yar'Adua has agreed to give a number of ministers, ambassadors to the camp.\"
