Habitat biodiversity as a determinant of fish community structure on coral reefs
Increased habitat diversity is often predicted to promote the diversity of animal communities because a greater variety of habitats increases the opportunities for species to specialize on different resources and coexist. Although positive correlations between the diversities of habitat and associated animals are often observed, the underlying mechanisms are only now starting to emerge, and none have been tested specifically in the marine environment. Scleractinian corals constitute the primary habitat-forming organisms on coral reefs and, as such, play an important role in structuring associated reef fish communities. Using the same field experimental design in two geographic localities differing in regional fish species composition, we tested the effects of coral species richness and composition on the diversity, abundance, and structure of the local fish community. Richness of coral species overall had a positive effect on fish species richness but had no effect on total fish abundance or evenness. At both localities, certain individual coral species supported similar levels of fish diversity and abundance as the high coral richness treatments, suggesting that particular coral species are disproportionately important in promoting high local fish diversity. Furthermore, in both localities, different microhabitats (coral species) supported very different fish communities, indicating that most reef fish species distinguish habitat at the level of coral species. Fish communities colonizing treatments of higher coral species richness represented a combination of those inhabiting the constituent coral species. These findings suggest that mechanisms underlying habitat-animal interaction in the terrestrial environment also apply to marine systems and highlight the importance of coral diversity to local fish diversity. The loss of particular key coral species is likely to have a disproportionate impact on the biodiversity of associated fish communities.
Healthcare Access and Quality Index based on mortality from causes amenable to personal health care in 195 countries and territories, 1990–2015: a novel analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015
National levels of personal health-care access and quality can be approximated by measuring mortality rates from causes that should not be fatal in the presence of effective medical care (ie, amenable mortality). Previous analyses of mortality amenable to health care only focused on high-income countries and faced several methodological challenges. In the present analysis, we use the highly standardised cause of death and risk factor estimates generated through the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) to improve and expand the quantification of personal health-care access and quality for 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2015. We mapped the most widely used list of causes amenable to personal health care developed by Nolte and McKee to 32 GBD causes. We accounted for variations in cause of death certification and misclassifications through the extensive data standardisation processes and redistribution algorithms developed for GBD. To isolate the effects of personal health-care access and quality, we risk-standardised cause-specific mortality rates for each geography-year by removing the joint effects of local environmental and behavioural risks, and adding back the global levels of risk exposure as estimated for GBD 2015. We employed principal component analysis to create a single, interpretable summary measure–the Healthcare Quality and Access (HAQ) Index–on a scale of 0 to 100. The HAQ Index showed strong convergence validity as compared with other health-system indicators, including health expenditure per capita (r=0·88), an index of 11 universal health coverage interventions (r=0·83), and human resources for health per 1000 (r=0·77). We used free disposal hull analysis with bootstrapping to produce a frontier based on the relationship between the HAQ Index and the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a measure of overall development consisting of income per capita, average years of education, and total fertility rates. This frontier allowed us to better quantify the maximum levels of personal health-care access and quality achieved across the development spectrum, and pinpoint geographies where gaps between observed and potential levels have narrowed or widened over time. Between 1990 and 2015, nearly all countries and territories saw their HAQ Index values improve; nonetheless, the difference between the highest and lowest observed HAQ Index was larger in 2015 than in 1990, ranging from 28·6 to 94·6. Of 195 geographies, 167 had statistically significant increases in HAQ Index levels since 1990, with South Korea, Turkey, Peru, China, and the Maldives recording among the largest gains by 2015. Performance on the HAQ Index and individual causes showed distinct patterns by region and level of development, yet substantial heterogeneities emerged for several causes, including cancers in highest-SDI countries; chronic kidney disease, diabetes, diarrhoeal diseases, and lower respiratory infections among middle-SDI countries; and measles and tetanus among lowest-SDI countries. While the global HAQ Index average rose from 40·7 (95% uncertainty interval, 39·0–42·8) in 1990 to 53·7 (52·2–55·4) in 2015, far less progress occurred in narrowing the gap between observed HAQ Index values and maximum levels achieved; at the global level, the difference between the observed and frontier HAQ Index only decreased from 21·2 in 1990 to 20·1 in 2015. If every country and territory had achieved the highest observed HAQ Index by their corresponding level of SDI, the global average would have been 73·8 in 2015. Several countries, particularly in eastern and western sub-Saharan Africa, reached HAQ Index values similar to or beyond their development levels, whereas others, namely in southern sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and south Asia, lagged behind what geographies of similar development attained between 1990 and 2015. This novel extension of the GBD Study shows the untapped potential for personal health-care access and quality improvement across the development spectrum. Amid substantive advances in personal health care at the national level, heterogeneous patterns for individual causes in given countries or territories suggest that few places have consistently achieved optimal health-care access and quality across health-system functions and therapeutic areas. This is especially evident in middle-SDI countries, many of which have recently undergone or are currently experiencing epidemiological transitions. The HAQ Index, if paired with other measures of health-system characteristics such as intervention coverage, could provide a robust avenue for tracking progress on universal health coverage and identifying local priorities for strengthening personal health-care quality and access throughout the world. Phosphate fertiliser alters carboxylates and bacterial communities in sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) rhizosheaths
Aims This study aimed to determine the structure of the bacterial community inhabiting the roots and rhizosheath of sweet potato cultivars, and how these bacterial communities respond to P addition and subsequent changes in carboxylate exudation by sweet potato roots. Methods Five sweet potato cultivars were grown with and without P addition in a low P soil in a glasshouse: Beauregard and Northern Star (both international cultivars) and Whagi Besta, Maraso and Marasunda which originate from Papua New Guinea. Rhizosheath carboxylates were measured and the root/rhizosheath bacterial community analysed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Results Carboxylate amount per g root weight was reduced (citrate) or increased (malate and oxalate) with addition of P. Carboxylate amount also positively correlated (citrate, oxalate and shikimate) or negatively correlated (malate) to bacterial alpha diversity when no P was added. P addition decreased bacterial diversity, altered the structure of the bacterial community (taxa and predicted function) and led to an enrichment of bacteria related to known P-solubilising bacteria ( Burkholderia and Massilia ) as well as to functions related to biosynthesis. Conclusion This study provides a first indication of types and putative roles of root/rhizosheath bacteria in sweet potato cultivars originating from a wide range of environments including marginal and P-impoverished soils and high-P agricultural systems.
Evaluation of a population-wide, systematic screening initiative for tuberculosis on Daru island, Western Province, Papua New Guinea
Background A population-wide, systematic screening initiative for tuberculosis (TB) was implemented on Daru island in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea, where TB is known to be highly prevalent. The initiative used a mobile van equipped with a digital X-ray device, computer-aided detection (CAD) software to identify TB-related abnormalities on chest radiographs, and GeneXpert machines for follow-on diagnostic testing. We describe the results of the TB screening initiative, evaluate its population-level impact and examine risk factors associated with TB detection. Methods Through a retrospective review of screening data, we assessed the effectiveness of the screening by examining the enrolment coverage and the proportion of people with TB among screened subjects. A cascade analysis was performed to illustrate the flow of participants in the screening algorithm. We conducted univariate and multivariate analyses to identify factors associated with TB. Furthermore, we estimated the number of additional cases detected by the project by examining the trend of routine TB case notifications during the intervention period, compared to the historical baseline cases and trend-adjusted expected cases. Results Of the island’s 18,854 residents, 8,085 (42.9%) were enrolled and 7,970 (98.6%) had chest X-ray interpreted by the CAD4TB software. A total of 1,116 (14.0%) participants were considered to have abnormal CXR. A total of 69 Xpert-positive cases were diagnosed, resulting in a detection rate of 853 per 100 000 population screened. 19.4% of people with TB had resistance to rifampicin. People who were in older age groups (aOR 6.6, 95%CI: 1.5–29.1 for the 45–59 age group), were severely underweight (aOR 2.5, 95%CI:1.0-6.1) or underweight (aOR 2.1, 95%CI: 1.1–3.8), lived in households < 5 people (aOR 3.4, 95%CI:1.8–6.6) and had a past history of TB (aOR 2.1, 95%CI: 1.2–3.6) were more likely to have TB. The number of bacteriologically confirmed TB notified during the intervention period was 79.3% and 90.8% higher than baseline notifications and forecasted notifications, respectively. Conclusion The screening project demonstrated its effectiveness with the high Xpert-positive TB prevalence among the participants and by successfully yielding additional cases of bacteriologically confirmed TB including rifampicin-resistant TB. The results and lessons learnt from the project should inform future TB screening initiatives in Papua New Guinea.
Using soundscapes to detect variable degrees of human influence on tropical forests in Papua New Guinea
There is global concern about tropical forest degradation, in part, because of the associated loss of biodiversity. Communities and indigenous people play a fundamental role in tropical forest management and are often efficient at preventing forest degradation. However, monitoring changes in biodiversity due to degradation, especially at a scale appropriate to local tropical forest management, is plagued by difficulties, including the need for expert training, inconsistencies across observers, and lack of baseline or reference data. We used a new biodiversity remote-sensing technology, the recording of soundscapes, to test whether the acoustic saturation of a tropical forest in Papua New Guinea decreases as land-use intensity by the communities that manage the forest increases. We sampled soundscapes continuously for 24 hours at 34 sites in different land-use zones of 3 communities. Land-use zones where forest cover was fully retained had significantly higher soundscape saturation during peak acoustic activity times (i.e., dawn and dusk chorus) compared with land-use types with fragmented forest cover. We conclude that, in Papua New Guinea, the relatively simple measure of soundscape saturation may provide a cheap, objective, reproducible, and effective tool for monitoring tropical forest deviation from an intact state, particularly if it is used to detect the presence of intact dawn and dusk choruses. Las comunidades y personas indígenas juegan un papel fundamental en el manejo del bosque tropical y son continuamente eficientes en la prevención de la degradación del bosque. Sin embargo, el monitoreo de cambios en la biodiversidad por causa de la degradación, especialmente a una escala apropiada para el manejo del bosque tropical local, está plagado de dificultades, incluyendo la necesidad de entrenamiento por expertos, inconsistencias entre los observadores, y la falta de una línea base de datos de referencia. Utilizamos una tecnología nueva de detección remota de la biodiversidad, la grabación del paisaje sonoro, para probar si la saturación acústica de un bosque tropical en Papua Nueva Guinea disminuye conforme incrementa la intensidad del uso de suelo por las comunidades que manejan el bosque. Muestreamos el paisaje sonoro continuamente durante 24 horas en 34 sitios en diferentes zonas de uso de suelo de tres comunidades. Las zonas de uso de suelo en donde la cobertura forestal se retuvo completamente tuvieron una saturación de paisaje sonoro significativamente más alta durante los momentos cumbre de actividad acústica (es decir, el coro al amanecer y al atardecer) en comparación con los tipos de uso de suelo con cobertura forestal fragmentada. Concluimos que, en Papua Nueva Guinea, la medida relativamente simple de la saturación del paisaje sonoro puede proporcionar una herramienta barata, objetiva, reproducible y efectiva para el monitoreo de la desviación del bosque tropical a partir de un estado intacto, particularmente si se utiliza para detectar la presencia de coros intactos al amanecer y al atardecer.
Managed retreat as a strategy for climate change adaptation in small communities: public health implications
In coming decades, sea level rise associated with climate change will make some communities uninhabitable. Managed retreat, or planned relocation, is a proactive response prior to catastrophic necessity. Managed retreat has disruptive health, sociocultural, and economic impacts on communities that relocate. Health impacts include mental health, social capital, food security, water supply, sanitation, infectious diseases, injury, and health care access. We searched peer-reviewed and gray literature for reports on small island or coastal communities at various stages of relocation primarily due to sea level rise. We reviewed these reports to identify public health impacts and barriers to relocation. We identified eight relevant small communities in the USA (Alaska, Louisiana, and Washington), Panama, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu. Affected populations range from 60 to 2700 persons and are predominantly indigenous people who rely on subsistence fishing and agriculture. Few reports directly addressed public health issues. While some relocations were successful, barriers to relocation in other communities include place attachment, potential loss of livelihoods, and lack of funding, suitable land, community consensus, and governance procedures. Further research is needed on the health impacts of managed retreat and how to facilitate population resilience. Studies could include surveillance of health indicators before and after communities relocate due to sea level rise, drought, or other environmental hazards. Lessons learned may inform relocation of both small and large communities affected by climate change.
Guild-specific patterns of species richness and host specialization in plant-herbivore food webs from a tropical forest
1. The extent to which plant-herbivore feeding interactions are specialized is key to understand the processes maintaining the diversity of both tropical forest plants and their insect herbivores. However, studies documenting the full complexity of tropical plant-herbivore food webs are lacking. 2. We describe a complex, species-rich plant-herbivore food web for lowland rain forest in Papua New Guinea, resolving 6818 feeding links between 224 plant species and 1490 herbivore species drawn from 11 distinct feeding guilds. By standardizing sampling intensity and the phylogenetic diversity of focal plants, we are able to make the first rigorous and unbiased comparisons of specificity patterns across feeding guilds. 3. Specificity was highly variable among guilds, spanning almost the full range of theoretically possible values from extreme trophic generalization to monophagy. 4. We identify guilds of herbivores that are most likely to influence the composition of tropical forest vegetation through density-dependent herbivory or apparent competition. 5. We calculate that 251 herbivore species (48 of them unique) are associated with each rain forest tree species in our study site so that the ~200 tree species coexisting in the lowland rain forest community are involved in ~50 000 trophic interactions with ~9600 herbivore species of insects. This is the first estimate of total herbivore and interaction number in a rain forest plant-herbivore food web. 6. A comprehensive classification of insect herbivores into 24 guilds is proposed, providing a framework for comparative analyses across ecosystems and geographical regions.
Phylogenetic structure of moth communities (Geometridae, Lepidoptera) along a complete rainforest elevational gradient in Papua New Guinea
We use community phylogenetics to elucidate the community assembly mechanisms for Geometridae moths (Lepidoptera) collected along a complete rainforest elevational gradient (200–3700 m a.s.l) on Mount Wilhelm in Papua New Guinea. A constrained phylogeny based on COI barcodes for 604 species was used to analyse 1390 species x elevation occurrences at eight elevational sites separated by 500 m elevation increments. We obtained Nearest Relatedness Index (NRI), Nearest Taxon Index (NTI) and Standardised Effect Size of Faith’s Phylogenetic Diversity (SES.PD) and regressed these on temperature, plant species richness and predator abundance as key abiotic and biotic predictors. We also quantified beta diversity in the moth communities between elevations using the Phylogenetic Sorensen index. Overall, geometrid communities exhibited phylogenetic clustering, suggesting environmental filters, particularly at higher elevations at and above 2200 m a.s.l and no evidence of overdispersion. NRI, NTI and SES.PD showed no consistent trends with elevation or the studied biotic and abiotic variables. Change in community structure was driven by turnover of phylogenetic beta-diversity, except for the highest 2700–3200 m elevations, which were characterised by nested subsets of lower elevation communities. Overall, the elevational signal of geometrid phylogeny was weak-moderate. Additional insect community phylogeny studies are needed to understand this pattern.
