Macrophage activation syndrome: early diagnosis is key
Macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) is a life-threatening condition, and it is a subset of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). The clinical features include a persistent high-grade fever, hepatosplenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, hemorrhagic manifestations, and a sepsis-like condition. From the clinical features, it is usually difficult to differentiate between a true sepsis, disease flare-ups, or MAS. Although the laboratory abnormalities are similar to those of a disseminated intravascular coagulation, which shows pancytopenia, coagulopathy, hypofibrinogenemia, and an elevated d-dimer test, it can also be a late stage of MAS. Currently, MAS is still underrecognized and usually results in delayed in diagnosis, which leads to high morbidity and mortality. This literature review was conducted in the context of the clinical manifestations and the laboratory abnormalities in MAS, which might provide some clues for an early diagnosis. The best ways for an early recognition and a satisfactory diagnosis were based on the relative changes in the overall parameters from the baseline, together with a thorough and continuous physical examination for these kinds of patients. At present, diagnostic criteria have been proposed for HLH, MAS-associated systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and an MAS-associated systemic lupus erythematosus. Therefore, selecting the proper diagnostic criteria for use is essential because not all of the criteria are suitable for every autoimmune disease.
Forensic science : in pursuit of justice

The Past, Present, and Future of Restorative Justice in the Chinese Mainland: A Systematic Review of Chinese Literature
In the Chinese mainland, restorative justice is closely related to “people’s mediation” and “victim-offender reconciliation.” These two terms reflect the content of restorative justice from different perspectives. Restorative justice was first introduced to the Chinese mainland in 2002, followed by some preliminary research. In-depth evaluation was conducted, and restorative justice later caught high-level attention and developed intensively. Restorative justice has become a hot topic in the Chinese mainland, with a lot of research conducted, many papers published, and a few books released, especially in the subfields of environmental crimes, juvenile cases, and corrections. At the same time, various criminal justice agencies have incorporated restorative justice at different stages of the criminal justice system, including criminal investigation, prosecution, adjudication, and corrections. Restorative justice has been well-established in legislation and widely practiced in law enforcement. It is built upon consensus, Chinese culture, and people’s mediation. It therefore has the potential to be applied continuously and effectively in the justice system.

Criminalistics as an Educational Tool: The Formation of Critical Awareness and the Empowerment of Students as Agents of Social Transformation
Objective: To analyze how understanding the mechanisms of criminal investigation can be applied in educational contexts as a strategy for developing critical awareness, investigative skills, and empowering students as agents of social transformation.   Theoretical Framework: Based on Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy (1987; 1996), active learning methodologies (MORAN, 2015), and the dialogue between education, citizenship, and justice (DEMO, 2009; DINIZ; ESTEFAM, 2016; GOHN, 2011), articulating interdisciplinary knowledge with a focus on transformative education.   Method: Qualitative, theoretical-reflective research, grounded in a systematic literature review of national and international scientific sources, combined with the analysis of pedagogical practices developed in interdisciplinary educational experiences.   Results and Discussion: The results show that investigative practices, such as forensic simulations, evidence analysis, ethical debates, and case studies, promote the development of critical awareness, strengthen student autonomy, and broaden their understanding of rights, duties, and social responsibility. The analysis also confirms the feasibility of implementing the proposal in different educational contexts, including those with structural limitations.   Research Implications: Findings indicate the need to invest in continuous teacher training, the development of innovative curricular proposals, and public policies that recognize criminalistics as a powerful pedagogical tool for ethical and civic education.   Originality/Value: This study stands out for proposing an unprecedented approach that combines criminalistics and critical education, promoting an innovative, socially engaged educational practice committed to crime prevention and strengthening youth citizenship.

Prediction of Adult Criminal Careers from Early Delinquency Offense Characteristics in the 1958 Philadelphia Birth Cohort
This paper uses the official juvenile offenses among the delinquent boys in the 1958 Philadelphia Birth Cohort to investigate the nature of delinquency conduct, offense-by-offense, and its relationship to adult crime status. Although it is convenient to think of an offender's delinquency career as a whole, such a career actually consists of one or more specific offenses, and offense conduct can be worth studying in its own right. Thus, it is necessary to determine whether the timing, type, severity, court disposition, and so on of these juvenile offenses can be used to predict adult career pathways. An extensive review of the literature revealed that investigations of early offense conduct and its connection to adult crime are exceedingly scarce. This study indicates as follows: First, the way a delinquent begins his criminal career is predictive of the adult trajectory that will be followed. Second, aspects of the first few offenses do influence whether delinquents continue committing crimes as an adult. The strongest predictor of adult crime status was juvenile court dispositions.

Experiential peer support and its effects on desistance from delinquent behavior: protocol paper for a systematic realist literature review
Background Experiential peers are increasingly involved in the development and delivery of interventions for individuals who are engaged in delinquent behavior. Experiential peer support, which is the provision of support to an individual engaged in delinquent behavior by someone who has previously also practiced such behavior, is one such application. Little is known, however, about its effects on desistance, or the mechanisms that explain these effects. On the basis of theoretical papers, program descriptions, and interviews with experts, we developed an initial program theory. We propose seven mechanisms that might play a role in the (potential) effects of support by experiential peers: (1) empathy and acceptance, (2) social learning, (3) social bonding, (4) social control, (5) narrative and identity formation, (6) hope and perspective, and (7) translation and connection. In addition, in this protocol paper, we describe the methods of a systematic realist literature review that will be conducted in order to investigate the evidence base for this program theory. Methods The study described in this protocol paper is a realist review, which is a suitable approach to study complex interventions and fits the explanatory purpose of the study. We outline the steps to be taken for the systematic realist review, including the selection and assessment of studies and the methods for synthesizing the findings. Discussion Investigating the effects and the underlying mechanisms of support by experiential peers for individuals with delinquent behavior is relevant because the forensic setting has some unique features, and the involvement of service users might create even more tension than in other settings due to stigma and perceived risks. The findings that will be reported in the realist review will contribute to the knowledge of the effects of support by experiential peers and will provide insight into which aspects remain to be studied. It might also provide formal care institutions with guidance on whether to involve experiential peers in the delivery of their services and the conditions under which these interventions are likely to lead to positive results.
