Samuel Pickering, professor of English at the University of Connecticut and reputed inspiration for the lead character in Dead Poets Society states, \"I do not dine with those who split infinitives\"; and Loftus Jestin, English Department Chair at Central Connecticut State University, believes \"hearing split infinitives is like listening to Mozart when the pianist keeps hitting all the wrong notes.\" TESOL Matters October/November 1998 Low Literacy Levels are a Public Health Problem In a recent interview, the director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Duane Alexander, defined difficulty learning to read as a public health problem. A study of the U.S. Justice Department's Office of Juvenile Justice found that reading failure is one likely cause for the frustration and anger that result in delinquent behavior, and that when reading skills improve, recidivism declines. All agree that the poor reading scores of our nation's children are intolerable and that reading improvement must be number one on the nation's education reform agenda.

CNN 23 June 1999 English Only Tests Unfair The President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans has determined that English-only tests that determine whether a student is promoted or graduates from high school may violate millions of Latino children's rights. In 1974, the Supreme Court ruled that schools are required to provide help for students with limited English, but opponents of bilingual education argue that malting \"accommodations for children on high stakes testing will only hurt them in the long run.\" Latino children currently perform half as well as their native-English-speaking peers and drop out of high school at twice the rate of non-Latinos. Because Latinos will become the nation's largest ethnic/racial group by the year 2010, educating the nation's 3.4 million Latino children properly is more important than ever. The Toronto Star 19 June 1999 Diversity in Massachusetts? A deputy commissioner of the Massachusetts department of education claims that books used to teach reading focus too much on diversity and not enough on skills.

The editors of Beginner Books have made this book of words as fun-filled as possible. It's full of ridiculous alligators, foolish bears, and giraffes' uncles all racing around getting involved in nonsensical adventures. The animals' zany antics focus children's attention and help them remember 1,350 basic elementary vocabulary words.
