Semexe and the Dilemma of Choosing Between Entrepreneurship and a Corporate Career/ SEMEXE E O DILEMA DE EMPREENDER OU SEGUIR NA CARREIRA CORPORATIVA
This case describes the beginnings of Semexe, a marketplace for certified second-hand sports equipment focused on high-performance bicycles. Founded by Gabriel Novais Pimenta and Rafael Papa, senior executives with promising careers in major companies, the idea emerged from a personal frustration they experienced as adventure racing enthusiasts when trying to purchase specialized gear. Identifying an untapped opportunity in the Brazilian sports market, they launched the project as a side initiative alongside their corporate careers, dedicating their free time to the venture. After six months of exponential growth and the entry of an angel investor, the founders faced a major dilemma: continue along their successful corporate trajectories or give it all up to become full-time entrepreneurs. This case requires students to analyze the company's inception and the factors influencing a pivotal decision. It further invites them to explore the challenges associated with choosing to forge an entrepreneurial path versus following a conventional corporate career. O caso descreve o inicio da Semexe, um marketplace de equipamentos esportivos usados com certificacao de procedencia, focado em bicicletas de alta performance. Fundada por Gabriel Novais Pimenta e Rafael Papa, altos executivos com carreiras promissoras em grandes empresas, a ideia surgiu a partir de uma frustracao pessoal como praticantes de corrida de aventura, ao tentarem adquirir equipamentos esportivos especificos. Percebendo uma oportunidade nao explorada no mercado brasileiro, lancaram o projeto como uma iniciativa paralela a vida corporativa, e se dedicaram ao negocio nas horas vagas. Apos seis meses de crescimento exponencial e a entrada de um investidor anjo, os fundadores se viram diante de um dilema: continuar suas trajetorias de sucesso no mundo corporativo ou abandonar tudo para empreender em tempo integral. O caso convida os alunos a compreender o inicio da empresa e os fatores que influenciaram a decisao alem de explorar os desafios associados a escolha entre trilhar um caminho empreendedor e seguir uma carreira corporativa tradicional.
