Aiming for Pensacola : fugitive slaves on the Atlantic and Southern frontiers
\"Before the abolition of slavery in the United States, Pensacola, Florida, was the site of extensive and enduring interracial resistance to slavery. In times of peace, fugitive slaves running to and from Pensacola encountered free men and women of various races, ethnicities, and nationalities--including farmers, laborers, mechanics, and seamen--who subsisted on the margins of society and had no vested interest in maintaining slavery or white supremacy. In times of war, they confronted soldiers and sailors who tried to demolish the foundation of slavery entirely. As a result, interracial resistance to slavery survived and often thrived in Pensacola in the century before the Civil War, and when the shockwaves of that revolutionary sectional conflict reverberated across the city, they proved vital to the institution's destruction\"--Provided by publisher.
Linkage between Microzooplankton Grazing and Phytoplankton Growth in a Gulf of Mexico Estuary
2002
Microzooplankton dilution grazing experiments were conducted with water collected from Pensacola Bay, Florida (USA) on 12 dates at 2 sites. Statistically significant grazing rates were observed in 22 of 24 experiments. Grazing rates in Upper Bay and Lower Bay were similar averaging 0.54 and 0.51 d-1, respectively. Phytoplankton growth rates were also similar at the two sites, averaging 1.02 and 1.00 d-1 at Upper Bay and Lower Bay, respectively. Phytoplankton growth rates usually exceeded grazing rates by about a factor of two, though microzooplankton grazing represented a significant mortality for phytoplankton. The literature suggests a linkage between phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing that spans a wide variety of aquatic environments. While individual growth and grazing rates were variable, growth frequently exceeded grazing by about two-fold. This implies that the role of microzooplankton is similar across a wide variety of aquatic systems.

1999
By applying discriminant analysis to benthic macroinvertebrate data, we have developed an indicator of benthic condition for northern Gulf of Mexico estuaries. The data used were collected by the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP) in the Louisianian Province from 1991 to 1994. This benthic index represents a linear combination of the following weighted parameters: the proportion of expected species diversity, the mean abundance of tubificid oligochaetes, the percent of total abundance represented by capitellid polychaetes, the percent of total abundance represented by bivalve mollusks, and the percent of total abundance represented by amphipods. We successfully validated and retrospectively applied the benthic index to all of the benthic data collected by EMAP in the Louisianian Province. This benthic index was also calculated for independent data collected from Pensacola Bay, Florida, in order to demonstrate its flexibility and applicability to different estuarine systems within the same biogeographic region. The benthic index is a useful and valid indicator of estuarine condition that is intended to provide environmental managers with a simple tool for assessing the health of benthic macroinvertebrate communities.
