Image analysis and teaching strategy optimization of folk dance training based on the deep neural network
2024
To improve the recognition effect of the folk dance image recognition model and put forward new suggestions for teachers’ teaching strategies, this study introduces a Deep Neural Network (DNN) to optimize the folk dance training image recognition model. Moreover, a corresponding teaching strategy optimization scheme is proposed according to the experimental results. Firstly, the image preprocessing and feature extraction of DNN are optimized. Secondly, classification and target detection models are established to analyze the folk dance training images, and the C-dance dataset is used for experiments. Finally, the results are compared with those of the Naive Bayes classifier, K-nearest neighbor, decision tree classifier, support vector machine, and logistic regression models. The results of this study provide new suggestions for teaching strategies. The research results indicate that the optimized classification model shows a significant improvement in classification accuracy across various aspects such as action complexity, dance types, movement speed, dance styles, body dynamics, and rhythm. The accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 scores have increased by approximately 14.7, 11.8, 13.2, and 17.4%, respectively. In the study of factors such as different training images, changes in perspective, lighting conditions, and noise interference, the optimized model demonstrates a substantial enhancement in recognition accuracy and robustness. These findings suggest that, compared to traditional models, the optimized model performs better in identifying various dances and movements, enhancing the accuracy and stability of classification. Based on the experimental results, strategies for optimizing the real-time feedback and assessment mechanism in folk dance teaching, as well as the design of personalized learning paths, are proposed. Therefore, this study holds the potential to be applied in the field of folk dance, promoting the development and innovation of folk dance education.

City Folk
2010
This is the story of English Country Dance, from its 18th
century roots in the English cities and countryside, to its
transatlantic leap to the U.S. in the 20th century, told by not
only a renowned historian but also a folk dancer, who has both
immersed himself in the rich history of the folk tradition and
rehearsed its steps. In City Folk, Daniel J. Walkowitz argues that
the history of country and folk dancing in America is deeply
intermeshed with that of political liberalism and the 'old left.'
He situates folk dancing within surprisingly diverse contexts, from
progressive era reform, and playground and school movements, to the
changes in consumer culture, and the project of a modernizing,
cosmopolitan middle class society. Tracing the spread of folk
dancing, with particular emphases on English Country Dance,
International Folk Dance, and Contra, Walkowitz connects the
history of folk dance to social and international political
influences in America. Through archival research, oral histories,
and ethnography of dance communities, City Folk allows dancers and
dancing bodies to speak. From the norms of the first half of the
century, marked strongly by Anglo-Saxon traditions, to the Cold War
nationalism of the post-war era, and finally on to the
counterculture movements of the 1970s, City Folk injects the
riveting history of folk dance in the middle of the story of modern
America.
Data-driven Optimization of Folk Dance Inheritance and Protection Strategies and Their Realization Paths
2025
In this study, folk dance movement images are captured by visual image camera, the captured images are converted to gray scale images by averaging method, and Gaussian model and median filtering method are used to subtract the binarized image background and remove the noise in the images. After that, the neighbor frame feature processing module is proposed to draw on the attention mechanism for the temporal feature extraction of folk dance movements, and the temporal features of different scales are extracted under the multi-branch temporal feature processing module. The MI module and AF module are added into the folk dance action recognition network to form a new skeleton-based multi-channel topological spatio-temporal separated adaptive graph convolutional network (MTSGCN). Example analysis shows that the action recognition accuracy of the MTSGCN model on the validation set (92.21%) is significantly higher than that of the baseline model (83.46%), and its recognition accuracies of nine single and double folk dance actions are improved by an average of 16.8% and 18.04% over the baseline model. In addition, this paper can integrate and optimize the resources and materials of folk dance cultural characteristics to form a comprehensive and systematic dance inheritance development model.

Dancing Spirit, Love, and War
2019
Meke, a traditional rhythmic dance accompanied by singing, signifies an important piece of identity for Fijians. Despite its complicated history of colonialism, racism, censorship, and religious conflict, meke remained a vital part of artistic expression and culture. Evadne Kelly performs close readings of the dance in relation to an evolving landscape, following the postcolonial reclamation that provided dancers with political agency and a strong sense of community that connected and fractured Fijians worldwide. Through extensive archival and ethnographic fieldwork in both Fiji and Canada, Kelly offers key insights into an underrepresented dance form, region, and culture. Her perceptive analysis of meke will be of interest in dance studies, postcolonial and Indigenous studies, anthropology and performance ethnography, and Pacific Island studies.
