A Combined Balance and Plyometric Training Approach: Effects on Physical Performance Parameters in Youth Male Handball Players: A Randomized Controlled Trial
The physical quality of young male handball players is one of the essential factors that influence team performance. Balance and plyometric training refers to the work of muscle groups related to stabilization located at the meeting of the base of the trunk, spine, pelvis and lower extremities of the human bodyThirty male handball players (age: 16.6±0.5 years) were randomly allocated to either an experi-mental group (n=15) performing combined postural control and plyometric training twice weekly in addition to standard handball training, or a control group (n=15) maintaining regular training alone. Pre- and post-intervention assessments included vertical jump performance (squat jump, countermovement jump), horizontal jump ability (standing long jump), linear sprint speed (5m, 20m), change-of-direction capac-ity (modified T-test, Illinois modified test), repeated change-of-direction ability, and postural control (Stork Balance test, Y-Balance test). The experimental group demonstrated significantly greater improvements compared to controls across multi-ple performance domains. Specifically, superior adaptations were observed in the squat jump (p

35 Health and performance promotion in youth sport (HAPPY): two matches within 72 hours increases knee injury risk in youth handball
IntroductionThis study investigated whether playing two or more matches less than 72 hours apart was associated with an increase in young handball players’ knee injury rates the following week compared with playing one or no matches.Materials and Methods731 Danish handball players aged 11–17 years (47% boys) reported weekly on handball exposure (match and training hours) and any new handball related knee injury over 30 weeks using the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center Health 2 questionnaire. Match congestion was categorized as: (Low) ≤1 match (reference group) or (High) ≥2 matches played within 72 hours, based on data from the Danish Handball database. Cox proportion hazard models were used to estimate (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) using calendar week as time scale and adjusting for weekly handball exposure, team gender, and previous knee injury.Results157 new knee injuries were reported in the weeks following 20.285 matches. Of these matches, 2.193 matches were played within a 72-hour interval. In the high congestion group, 24 new knee injuries occurred. High match congestion was associated with a 71% higher knee injury rate (HR=1.71 [95% CI; 1.23–2.40]) compared with those in the low congestion group with a longer recovery period between matches.ConclusionPlaying two or more matches within a 72-hour period increases the new knee injury rate the following week in young handball players. This suggests handball matches to be scheduled at least 72 hours apart to reduce knee injury risk in young players.
HANDEBOL EM PAUTA: RESENHA DO FILME \FOREVER THE MOMENT\
The present manuscript aims to review the movie Forever the moment, portraying the trajectory of the South Korean women's handball team in the Olympic Games of Athens-2004. At the conclusion, contrary to the usual feeling of frustration caused by the achievement of the silver medal in team sports, it was evidenced that the defeat, when associated to maximum effort and performance, also brings glory.
Physical Demands during Official Competitions in Elite Handball: A Systematic Review
An understanding of physical demands during official competitions is essential to achieving the highest performance in handball. The aim of this systematic review was to summarise the available scientific evidence associated with physical demands during official competitions in elite handball according to playing positions, competition level and gender. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, 17 studies were selected after a systematic search and selection process of three digital databases: PubMed, Web of Science and Sport Discus. The quality of the selected studies was evaluated using the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology checklist; the average score was 18.47 points. The sample consisted of 1175 handball players, of whom 1042 were men (88.68%) and 133 were women (11.32%). The results show that an elite handball player covered on average 3664.4 ± 1121.6 m during a match. The average running pace was 84.8 ± 17.2 m∙min−1. The total distance covered was largely greater in national competitions (4506.7 ± 647.9 m) compared with international competitions (2190.3 ± 1950.5 m) (effect size (ES) = 1.2); however, the running pace did not present any significant difference between the international or national level (ES = 0.06). In regard to gender, the total distance covered was moderately greater in female competitions (4549.1 ± 758.6 m) compared with male competitions (3332.6 ± 1257.7 m) (ES = 0.9), and the running pace was largely greater in female competitions (110.5 ± 7.2 m∙min−1) compared with male competitions (78.4 ± 19.7 m∙min−1) (ES = 1.6). In relation to playing position, backs and wings covered a moderately greater total distance (ES = 0.7 and 0.6) and slightly more meters per minute (ES = 0.4 and 0.2) than pivots. Moreover, the technical activity profile differed between playing positions. Backs performed moderately more throws than pivots and wings (ES = 1.2 and 0.9), pivots exhibited largely more body contact than backs and wings, and wings performed moderately more fast breaks (6.7 ± 3.0) than backs (2.2 ± 2.3) (ES = 1.8). Therefore, this research study provides practical applications for handball coaches and strength and conditioning professionals with respect to designing and implementing more individualised training programmes to maximise performance and reduce injury risk.
