On the origin of time : Stephen Hawking's final theory
2023
\"Stephen Hawking's closest collaborator offers the intellectual superstar's final thoughts on the cosmos-a dramatic revision of the theory that made him the heir to Einstein's legacy. Perhaps the biggest question Stephen Hawking tried to answer in his extraordinary life was how the universe could have created conditions so perfectly hospitable to life. Pondering this mystery led Hawking to study the big bang origin of the universe, but his early work ran into a crisis when the math predicted many big bangs producing a multiverse-countless different universes, most far too bizarre to harbor life. Holed up in the theoretical physics department at Cambridge, Stephen Hawking and his friend and collaborator Thomas Hertog worked shoulder to shoulder for twenty years on a new quantum theory of the cosmos. As their journey took them deeper into the big bang, they were startled to find a deeper level of evolution in which the physical laws themselves transform and simplify until particles, forces, and even time itself fades away. Once upon a time, perhaps, there was no time. This led them to a revolutionary idea: the laws of physics are not set in stone but are born and co-evolve as the universe they govern takes shape. On the Origin of Time takes the reader on a quest to understand questions bigger than our universe, peering into the extreme quantum physics of black holes and the big bang and drawing on the latest developments in string theory. As Hawking's final days drew near, the two collaborators developed a final theory proposing their radical new Darwinian perspective on the origins of our universe. Hertog offers a striking new vision that ties together more deeply than ever the nature of the universe's birth with our existence. This new theory profoundly transforms the way we think about our place in the order of the cosmos and may ultimately prove Hawking's biggest legacy\"-- Provided by publisher.

Black holes, Cauchy horizons, and mass inflation
2024
Event horizons and Cauchy horizons are highly idealized mathematical constructions that do not fully capture the key physics of either Hawking radiation or mass inflation. Indeed, because they are teleological, both event horizons and Cauchy horizons are (in a precise technical sense) not physically observable. In contrast, by inspecting the quasi-local behaviour of null geodesics, long-lived apparent horizons (or more generally long-lived quasi-local horizons) are in principle physically observable, and are “good enough\" for then pragmatically redefining a black hole, and “good enough” for generating Hawking radiation. Furthermore it is now also clear that long lived apparent horizons (quasi-local horizons) are also “good enough\" for generating mass inflation. These observations suggest that one should be somewhat careful when trying to extrapolate rigorous mathematical theorems, which often embody mathematical idealizations that do not necessarily correspond to what a finite resource astronomer can actually measure, into the astrophysical realm.

Hell is only a word. The reality is much, much worse
2024
While the genre of space horror is generically defined as simply space-based horror, there exist specific tropes that can be used to identify representative works. Among these are: (i) a relatively small ensemble cast, (ii) many of whom die over the course of the story; (iii) a secret corporate/political/military agenda and (iv) physical and psychological stresses due to the arduous process of space travel and related isolation. A subset of space horror adds metaphysical elements, drawing connections to Hell, more specifically a liminal space that Victor Turner terms the “betwixt and between.” As the region around and within the event horizon of a black hole fits this definition (like a classical view of Hell, trapping its victims for all eternity), it suggests that black holes could play an important role in Hell-related space horror. This paper analyses three works of hellish space horror – the much-maligned Disney film The Black Hole (1979), the cult-classic film Event Horizon (1997), and the “Impossible Planet/The Satan’s Pit” arc of new series Doctor Who (2006) – and demonstrates how they are representative of the use of black holes as fantastical gateways to supernatural (or at the very least super-natural) experiences with Hell.

Stephen Hawking was one of the world's most famous scientists. His ground-breaking research into black holes and the Big Bang has helped to explain the beginnings of our universe and his book A Brief History of Time has sold over 10 million copies. Diagnosed with a form of motor neuron disease when he was a young man, Stephen was inspired to achieve his goals as fast as possible. Through incredible determination and skill, he became a legendary scientist, a best-selling author, and the man that changed the way we think about the universe.
Artificial Intelligence on Food Vulnerability: Future Implications within a Framework of Opportunities and Challenges
2024
This study explores the field of artificial intelligence (AI) through the lens of Stephen Hawking, who warned of its potential dangers. It aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of AI and its implications for food security using a qualitative approach and offering a contemporary perspective on the topic. The study explores the challenges and opportunities presented by AI in various fields with an emphasis on the global food reality. It also highlights the critical importance of striking a harmonious balance between technological progress and the preservation of local wisdom, cultural diversity, and environmental sustainability. In conclusion, the analysis argues that AI is a transformative force with the potential to address global food shortages and facilitate sustainable food production. However, it is not without significant risks that require rigorous scrutiny and ethical oversight.

IF YOU THINK AI WON'T ECLIPSE HUMANITY, YOU'RE PROBABLY JUST A HUMAN
If that is the case, then scary AI will continue to make great movie fodder, but will never actually arrive. Since that definition would not be especially useful in policy discussions about choosing the best track for development of the technology, this Article will use the following. Since 2012, the number of connected devices has increased from under 9 billion to over 50 billion.16 This figure includes devices that previously were not connected to the internet, i.e., not things like computers and smartphones.17 So, about the time when it became apparent that the internet was unsecure (if not unsecurable), the collective decision was made to connect all the things that make modern life possible-refrigerators, utility grids, thermostats, etc.-to the internet! In the case of AI, most of the dire scenarios sketched out take the form of either killer robots powered by malevolent AI or AI that becomes so advanced that, while not actively evil, simply determines people are too insignificant to be relevant and acts in ways that crush the human race.18 The concern about dangerous AI led experts in the field to release an open letter warning ofthe risks ofusing AI in offensive autonomous weapons \"beyond meaningful human control. In an interview about his position, Stephen Hawking warned that advanced AI might wipe out humanity.21 Hawking was worried less about actively malicious AI than he was about AI that might kill humans incidentally in pursuit of benevolent (or at least not malevolent) ends.22 Musk, on the other hand, seems to fear actively malevolent AI turning weapons or tools it controls on its human creators in a bid to terminate the species.23 The Muskian concern presupposes that, by design or otherwise, the AI has the ability to set or interpret its own goals.24 Perhaps the most effective way to address this concern is to ensure AI has no ability to directly control strategic weapons systems.
