The corporate auditor to the once high-flying Livent theatre company run by disgraced mogul Garth Drabinsky was partly responsible for the hundreds of millions of dollars creditors ended up losing, Ontario's top court ruled Friday. In upholding an $85.6-million award against Deloitte and Touche -- $118 million with interest -- the Court of Appeal sided with a judge who found the auditor had been negligent in failing to detect, and act on, the fraudulent behaviour of Drabinsky and his partner, Myron Gottlieb, in the 1990s.

The San Diego Union-Tribune Don Bauder Column

The lawsuit says, \"Peregrine's board of directors and audit committee were completely unaware (italics mine) of the accounting irregularities\" that Andersen purportedly approved, including overstated accounts receivable and revenue, improperly valued stock options, understated liabilities and improperly disclosed writeoffs of bad receivables. Even before 1996, Andersen auditors were fighting with the firm's consulting side, which eventually split off in 2000. During those years, Andersen \"took its eye off the ball,\" former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker, who tried to rescue Andersen, has said. Peregrine's board is engaging in \"conscious avoidance,\" says San Diego attorney Michael Aguirre, who has filed suit over the collapse. Peregrine has attacked both Andersen and KPMG, its second accounting firm. \"It's an indication somebody is trying to create a smoke screen to hide their own conduct,\" Aguirre says.

Highly HUMAN Jobs
2013
Get ready for the next great occupational downsizing. The world is preparing to minimize the need for humans to perform \"knowledge work\" as well as simpler forms of service work. The basic reason for this projected shift is simple. Just as mechanical technology got complex enough to perform factory work more economically than human laborers with muscles and manual skill, so electronic technology is fast becoming complex enough to perform know-how work more economically than human brainpower. This contention applies to knowledge work in which information or definable know-how is paramount. In the near future, high-tech job openings are likely to exceed the supply of qualified applicants in many fields. Looking ahead, honing highly human skills in tandem with a tech career offers a safety net. All the highly human skills together add up to one thing, which is the very reason for work or any purposeful activity: It's the electric state of aliveness that may best be signified by the word \"happiness.\"
