Picasso's portraits of Isabel Rawsthorne
2017
Pablo Picasso's pictures of the painter Isabel Rawsthorne (1912-92), who was also portrayed by Jacob Epstein, Andre Derain, Alberto Giacometti and Francis Bacon, have remained unidentified for sixty years. Here, Jacobi discusses three portraits that arose from Rawsthorne's friendship with Picasso. Picasso did not lack 'beautiful women to paint, and his belated incorporation of Rawsthorne's likeness into his Bust of a woman series was more than a macho retort. Rawsthorne provided a model of a young woman artist, 'liberated' femininity and political daring that interested Picasso. Furthermore, she had close ties with leading sculptors and painters of Picasso's generation. This vital intersection of relationships has been largely overlooked, partly due to Picasso's break with Andre Derain in 1944 and the conclusion of his partnership with Dora Maar. Rawsthorne had lost touch with Picasso by 1947, when she returned to London and he moved to Vallauris in the south of France, but she continued to see Maar until 1952. In 1940, Picasso employed Rawsthorne in a lively dialogue with and about art -- present, past and future. Hence his pride in fetching the paintings when they were reunited in 1945.

Help the Aged, Saga and Age Concern are good sources for the over- 65s. LETTERS FROM AFAR
2022
After meeting on Paris's Left Bank in 1933, the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti and the British painter Isabel Rawsthorne would soon become entwined, supporting each other in the most testing of times. Here, curator Carol Jacobi charts their relationship through the letters they exchanged at the height of their romantic and artistic affair. The first written exchange between Alberto Giacometti and Isabel Rawsthorne reveals an intimate understanding in which a lot could be imparted in a little. In Oct 1937, she sent him a postcard depicting Pietro Lorenzetti's Madonna and Child c.1320 with saints John and Francis, the back blank apart from the return address. The image spoke to their shared love of early Italian painters, and also, gently, to Alberto's sadness. He was in Switzerland at the time, visiting his family, but his younger sister Ottilia had just died suddenly in childbirth. Alberto was heartbroken and cherished his newborn nephew Silvio; he had listened at Ottilia's belly during her pregnancy. The picture of male figures attending the mother and baby was a consoling reference to him and his brother Diego as Silvio's uncles.A Conversation: Isabel Rawsthorne and Alberto Giacometti, Tate Britain, from 7 February.

Genesis is all about balance
2005
Jay Marchant has been named general manager of franchising corporate operations for Moka Coffee houses, which is facing fierce competition these days from U.S. giant Starbucks and Duncan-based Serious Coffee. Moka Coffee, owned by Victoria's Len Kowalewich, has locations at Shoal Point, Cook Street Village, Langford and Admirals Walk and wants to expand its brand on Vancouver Island. Marchant, 37, has spent the past four years in optical retail with Pearl Vision and several years prior in restaurants. Marchant says Moka wants to build on the loyalty that exists and expand on its organic, fair-trade beans and other goods from local companies. The Shoal Point and Langford locations are currently corporately owned. Web: www.mokahouse.com A Parksville company that manufactures a security device for sliding doors just got its foot in the door of the world's largest retailer. Robert Allen, president of Window Stick Alarms Ltd., started selling his invention in a Nanaimo Wal-Mart store this month. The retailing giant's small-market test could lead to more exposure in B.C. and potential national distribution, says Allen. A patent on his Window Stick is pending. The adjustable locking device fits into sliding door gutters and is equipped with a 110-decibel, pressure-activated alarm. \"Our mission is to protect homes and families from break-and-enter crimes,\" says Allen. Víctimas de la genética y el abuso
2008

Author donation boosts Sheffield pony rescue operation
2015
\"She's always very creative,\" he said. \"We were just chatting about what we might do for the pony rescue foundation . . . and she just challenged both us to create a book about Wind Dancer. \"I kind of won the contest because the next day I wrote the book.\" \"The rescue was similar - it was my daughter's dream and on her death, we did that for her,\" she explained. \"So it just sort of represents what we're about. It was just really special.\" \"We're going to step it up over the winter time and try and look for a publisher,\" he said, noting they are currently selling the book at craft fairs and Wind Dancer events. \"See if we can capitalize on their marketing and distribution.\"

Tough requirements turn off applicants

\"People call in and ask what it takes. When you tell them, you get that sudden stop and, \"Oh,' \" [Frank Lambert] said. \"I think that's the biggest thing that hurts us. You can fill out an application at a grocery store and get hired within weeks.\" \"It's the timing and getting everyone trained,\" she said. \"It's a long process before you even get on the road and get paid.\" \"It's part-time, split-shift work, traffic is horrendous and some students are difficult to deal with,\" he said. \"It's a job a person has to really want to do, or it's not a good fit.\"
