Athenian Lettering of the Fifth Century B.C

This book has chapters on methodology, on the writing of the first decrees and laws of the years ca. 515 to 450 B.C., on unique examples of writing of ca. 450 to 400, on the inscribers of the Lapis Primus and Lapis Secundus (IG I3 259-280), and on those of the Attic Stelai (IG I3 421-430). These are followed by studies of 11 individual cutters arranged in chronological order.
This study brings order to the study of hands of the fifth century by setting out a methodology and by discussing the attempts of others to identify hands. Another aim is to bring out the individuality of the writing of these early inscribers. It shows that from the beginning the writing on Athenian inscriptions on stone was very idiosyncratic, for all intents and purposes individual writing. It identifies the inscribing of the sacred inventories of Athena beginning about 450 B.C. as the genesis of the professional letter cutter in Athens and traces the trajectory of the profession. While the dating of many inscriptions will remain a matter for scholarly discussion, the present study narrows the dates of many texts. It also pinpoints the origin of the mistaken idea that three-bar sigma did not occur on public documents after the year 446 in order to make those who are not expert more aware that this is not a reliable means of dating.

Linguistic Analysis of Generic-Generic Drug Name Pairs Prone to Wrong-Drug Errors for which Tall-Man Lettering is Recommended

Objective
The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) and the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) disseminated widely used lists of drug name pairs involved in wrong-drug errors, for which they recommended tall-man lettering (TML). Linguistic similarity is believed responsible for confusion of these drugs. This study aims to quantify linguistic similarity and other linguistic properties of these generic-generic name pairs.
Methods
The FDA’s Phonetic and Orthographic Computer Analysis (POCA) software was used to generate numerical similarity scores for the generic-generic name pairs on these lists and to identify conflicts between these names and the names of other marketed products. Within each pair, differences in name length and the number of identical prefix (initial) letters and suffix (final) letters were determined.
Results
The selected pairs shared a mean of 2.5 (± 1.8) identical prefix letters and 3.2 (± 2.9) identical suffix letters. The mean POCA score 69.5 (± 9.7), indicated moderate-to-high similarity. POCA scores for individual pairs ranged from 90 (most similar) to 46 (least similar). Individual names averaged 11.2 (± 9.1) high-similarity conflicts with names of other marketed drugs.
Conclusions
POCA analysis could be a valuable tool in determining whether linguistic similarity contributes to specific wrong-drug errors. The finding of 11.2 (± 9.1) high-similarity conflicts with names of other marketed drugs is more than for candidate names USAN accepts and suggests the names on the FDA and ISMP lists are linguistically problematic.

A moderated mediation analysis of the effect of lettering case and color temperature on trustworthiness perceptions and investment decisions

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to test the theoretical framework of lettering case, color temperature, perceived trustworthiness and investment intentions. First, it aims to test whether the effect of lettering case on investment intentions is mediated by trustworthiness. Second, the study will examine if this process is moderated by color temperature.Design/methodology/approachFollowing the behavioral research method, this study employed a 2 (the fully-lowercase slogan vs the initial-uppercase slogan) by 2 (warm-color design vs cool-color design) full factorial between-subject design. Two hundred participants were recruited for the experiment to test the hypotheses.FindingsFor the lowercase slogans (vs uppercase slogans), we found that people tended to have a high level of perceived trustworthiness, which led to a high level of investment intentions. In addition, the indirect effect of the lettering case on investment intentions through the perceived trustworthiness was moderated by color temperature. Specifically, the visually warm advertisement (vs visually cool design) would strengthen the effect of lowercase slogans on customers' investment intentions.Originality/valueWhen people make a financial decision with limited, incomplete or overly complex information, simplified visual heuristics, rather than rational algorithmic processing, play a significant role in their decision-making process. However, only a limited amount of research has addressed the effect of the lettering case on customers' perceptions and the consequent decision-making process from a financial advertising perspective. This study tries to supplement and extend the visual heuristics theory, highlighting the role of simplified heuristics, rather than rational algorithmic processing, in financial customers' decision-making process.

Design for Sustainability: The Effect of Lettering Case on Environmental Concern from a Green Advertising Perspective

Recent green advertising research has focused on the effectiveness of different advertising claims and people’s interactions with the environment or environmental concerns, indicating the significant role of visual appeals in influencing people’s environmental attitudes. However, surprisingly, only a limited amount of research has addressed the effect of lettering case in green advertising on people’s perceptions and their consequent environmental concerns. This study tries to fill in this research gap by showing that uppercase (vs. lowercase) advertising taglines on environmental threats could improve people’s fear arousal, advertising congruence, environmental concern and the mediating role of fear arousal and congruence in this process. The managerial implications and limitations are also discussed in this study.
