Child labor
2024
PurposeIn addition to being a violation of human rights, the practice of child labor can be related to criminality against young people. In view of this, the hypothesis tested in this article was that child labor aggravates youth homicide through educational level.Design/methodology/approachThis study used annual data for the 26 states plus the Federal District for the period 2001 to 2014. To do so, the authors used the iterated feasible generalized least squares (IFGLS) estimator under the seemingly unrelated regressions (SUR) model.FindingsThe results showed that child labor positively affects the homicide of young people, showing education as a transmission channel through which the effect is materialized. The general conclusion, given this, that work is an alternative for children not to enter the world of crime due to its socializing character, cannot be sustained.Practical implicationsThis evidence provides input to the formulation of policies and programs to eradicate or slow child labor. In addition to the social and economic rise of individuals, it is important to emphasize the role of education (human capital) in explaining economic growth.Originality/valueSo far, there is no record of national research that sought to empirically assess the effect of child labor on crime, in particular, on the homicide of young people, considering education as a transmission channel, and this assessment is the contribution of the present study to the economic literature on crime.Peer reviewThe peer review history for this article is available at: https://publons.com/publon/10.1108/IJSE-03-2023-0163

The resurgence of service-learning as a social impact tool for youth confidence-building and learning: the untapped latent capital of the Saldanha area
2023
Social impact is complex and requires a multi-faceted approach to youth development. Hence, it is a comprehensive and all-inclusive process, and approach. This article highlighted the urgent need for youth service-learning activities in Saldanha through partnership agreements between secondary and tertiary educational institutions. The alignment of effective community activities and supportive service-learning structures on various institutional platforms should trigger youth development and or empowerment. Through service-learning and social impact intervention, communities can develop their resilience strategies. Modern youth’s face numerous encounters associated with the real-life issues of both rural and urban communities, for example, the incessant surge in youth employment, lack of capacity in upskilling and even reskilling of youth, early school dropouts, crime, drug, and alcohol abuse that bring about social disturbances in family households. This research focuses on the existing literature regarding the significance of social impact as a tool to galvanize and inspire the youth to bring about change for the socio-economic betterment of communities. Research in South Africa and even in local areas lack the propensity and the political will to collectively embark on an effort to merge economic and current development with youth development. This article foresees and or envisions the current youth-supporting development structures in the study area, the underlying causes of youth decay, and what changes have been institutionalized to improve the youth’s educational, social, and economic circumstances (environments). This article focuses on a secondary (desktop) research approach that involves using already existing literature and applying it in a real context. The research question is as follows: What service-learning programmes are available for youth confident-building in Saldanha?

Young Adult Comics and the Critics: A Call for New Modes of Interdisciplinary Close Reading
2017
From 2006 to 2015, forty-six of the forty-nine text-only finalists for the Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature were released by HarperCollins, Penguin, Macmillan, and other international publishing houses that operate long-standing children's and young adult imprints and employ editorial personnel who establish criteria for age and reading level designations.3 In contrast, as mentioned above, comics marketed to readers under the age of eighteen during the same period have been produced in a variety of contexts and often by small, independent publishers whose editors have little attachment to the conventions that govern the marketing of mainstream young adult literature.[...]while recommended comics lists such as the YALSA \"Great Graphic Novels for Teens\" and the annual group of Eisner Award nominees have provided a roadmap for navigating the young adult comics marketplace, significant numbers of comics created for teens are released outside the children's and young adult divisions of major publishers, meaning that age designations are often absent or blurred.Given the renewed interest in young adult comics on the part of readers, authors, artists, educators, librarians, and publishers, the question then becomes how scholars of young adult literature can follow Hatfield's call for interdisciplinary engagement with children's and young adult comics.4 Understandably, the multimodal nature of comics texts has attracted critics from a variety of backgrounds who bring their own disciplinary practices and classification systems to bear upon the medium. When it comes to developing an effective critical lens for the examination of young adult comics, scholars benefit from acknowledging the preeminent status of visual imagery, while paying attention to the thematic patterns, cultural contexts, and linguistic structures that characterize literary analysis.6 Moreover, it is important to recognize that phenomena that are commonplace in text-only narratives do not always manifest themselves in a similar fashion in the image/text realm of comics. In three establishing panels scattered across the text, Vivès presents a portrait of the characters from the perspective of an omniscient narrator; in the rest of the comic, however, the reader's access to the narrative is limited to what the protagonist sees.[...]the only time the reader sees the woman is when the protagonist sees her, and the protagonist's dialogue is only known to the reader based upon the replies that the woman makes to him.

The Communist Manifesto
2018,2017
The Communist Manifesto is one of the most influential political books in the world, despite being over one hundred years old. German philosophers Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels authored the manuscript at the beginning of the 1848 revolutions that swept across Europe. The book outlines Communist theories about class struggle, the problems of capitalism, and predicts the rise of the working class (referred to as the proletariat) against the bourgeois that will ultimately end class society. Marx and Engels' theories increased in prevalence during the twentieth century when Communist rulers governed much of the world's population. This is an unabridged version of Samuel Moore's 1888 English translation.
Capitalism
2014
Capitalism is first and foremost an economic system that prizes free and competitive markets, private ownership, and a comparatively small role for government intervention and regulation. Yet capitalism also has many political undertones and has become associated with notions of freedom, individualism, self-determination, and anti-unionism. As a political and economic philosophy, it was a major player in the Cold War, squaring off against communism and seemingly triumphing. The colorful history of this economic system that doubles as a political philosophy is recounted here, from Medieval-era experiments in agraian capitalism and mercantilism to the 21st century digital economiy and bitcoins. This is a fascinating and provocative read and an immersive journey through the political and economic history of the modern world.
