Mental health challenges, treatment experiences, and care needs of post-secondary students: a cross-sectional mixed-methods study
Background Post-secondary students frequently experience high rates of mental health challenges. However, they present meagre rates of treatment-seeking behaviours. This elevated prevalence of mental health problems, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic, can lead to distress, poor academic performance, and lower job prospects following the completion of education. To address the needs of this population, it is important to understand students' perceptions of mental health and the barriers preventing or limiting their access to care. Methods A broad-scoping online survey was publicly distributed to post-secondary students, collecting demographic, sociocultural, economic, and educational information while assessing various components of mental health. Results In total, 448 students across post-secondary institutions in Ontario, Canada, responded to the survey. Over a third ( n  = 170; 38.6%) of respondents reported a formal mental health diagnosis. Depression and generalized anxiety disorder were the most commonly reported diagnoses. Most respondents felt that post-secondary students did not have good mental health ( n  = 253; 60.5%) and had inadequate coping strategies ( n  = 261; 62.4%). The most frequently reported barriers to care were financial ( n  = 214; 50.5%), long wait times ( n  = 202; 47.6%), insufficient resources ( n  = 165; 38.9%), time constraints ( n  = 148; 34.9%), stigma ( n  = 133; 31.4%), cultural barriers ( n  = 108; 25.5%), and past negative experiences with mental health care ( n  = 86; 20.3%). The majority of students felt their post-secondary institution needed to increase awareness ( n  = 231; 56.5%) and mental health resources ( n  = 306; 73.2%). Most viewed in-person therapy and online care with a therapist as more helpful than self-guided online care. However, there was uncertainty about the helpfulness and accessibility of different forms of treatment, including online interventions. The qualitative findings highlighted the need for personal strategies, mental health education and awareness, and institutional support and services. Conclusions Various barriers to care, perceived lack of resources, and low knowledge of available interventions may contribute to compromised mental health in post-secondary students. The survey findings indicate that upstream approaches such as integrating mental health education for students may address the varying needs of this critical population. Therapist-involved online mental health interventions may be a promising solution to address accessibility issues.

Factors that influence mental health of university and college students in the UK: a systematic review
Background Worsening mental health of students in higher education is a public policy concern and the impact of measures to reduce transmission of COVID-19 has heightened awareness of this issue. Preventing poor mental health and supporting positive mental wellbeing needs to be based on an evidence informed understanding what factors influence the mental health of students. Objectives To identify factors associated with mental health of students in higher education. Methods We undertook a systematic review of observational studies that measured factors associated with student mental wellbeing and poor mental health. Extensive searches were undertaken across five databases. We included studies undertaken in the UK and published within the last decade (2010–2020). Due to heterogeneity of factors, and diversity of outcomes used to measure wellbeing and poor mental health the findings were analysed and described narratively. Findings We included 31 studies, most of which were cross sectional in design. Those factors most strongly and consistently associated with increased risk of developing poor mental health included students with experiences of trauma in childhood, those that identify as LGBTQ and students with autism. Factors that promote wellbeing include developing strong and supportive social networks. Students who are prepared and able to adjust to the changes that moving into higher education presents also experience better mental health. Some behaviours that are associated with poor mental health include lack of engagement both with learning and leisure activities and poor mental health literacy. Conclusion Improved knowledge of factors associated with poor mental health and also those that increase mental wellbeing can provide a foundation for designing strategies and specific interventions that can prevent poor mental health and ensuring targeted support is available for students at increased risk.

The association between physical activity and mental health during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic: a systematic review
Introduction The Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic affected countries worldwide and has changed peoples’ lives. A reduction in physical activity and increased mental health problems were observed, mainly in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, this systematic review aims to examine the association between physical activity and mental health during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods In July 2021, a search was applied to PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Eligibility criteria included cross-sectional, prospective, and longitudinal study designs and studies published in English; outcomes included physical activity and mental health (e.g., depressive symptoms, anxiety, positive and negative effects, well-being). Results Thirty-one studies were included in this review. Overall, the studies suggested that higher physical activity is associated with higher well-being, quality of life as well as lower depressive symptoms, anxiety, and stress, independently of age. There was no consensus for the optimal physical activity level for mitigating negative mental symptoms, neither for the frequency nor for the type of physical activity. Women were more vulnerable to mental health changes and men were more susceptive to physical activity changes. Conclusion Physical activity has been a good and effective choice to mitigate the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Public health policies should alert for possibilities to increase physical activity during the stay-at-home order in many countries worldwide.
A rapid review of the impact of COVID-19 on the mental health of healthcare workers: implications for supporting psychological well-being
Background Health and social care workers (HSCWs) have carried a heavy burden during the COVID-19 crisis and, in the challenge to control the virus, have directly faced its consequences. Supporting their psychological wellbeing continues, therefore, to be a priority. This rapid review was carried out to establish whether there are any identifiable risk factors for adverse mental health outcomes amongst HSCWs during the COVID-19 crisis. Methods We undertook a rapid review of the literature following guidelines by the WHO and the Cochrane Collaboration’s recommendations. We searched across 14 databases, executing the search at two different time points. We included published, observational and experimental studies that reported the psychological effects on HSCWs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results The 24 studies included in this review reported data predominantly from China (18 out of 24 included studies) and most sampled urban hospital staff. Our study indicates that COVID-19 has a considerable impact on the psychological wellbeing of front-line hospital staff. Results suggest that nurses may be at higher risk of adverse mental health outcomes during this pandemic, but no studies compare this group with the primary care workforce. Furthermore, no studies investigated the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on social care staff. Other risk factors identified were underlying organic illness, gender (female), concern about family, fear of infection, lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) and close contact with COVID-19. Systemic support, adequate knowledge and resilience were identified as factors protecting against adverse mental health outcomes. Conclusions The evidence to date suggests that female nurses with close contact with COVID-19 patients may have the most to gain from efforts aimed at supporting psychological well-being. However, inconsistencies in findings and a lack of data collected outside of hospital settings, suggest that we should not exclude any groups when addressing psychological well-being in health and social care workers. Whilst psychological interventions aimed at enhancing resilience in the individual may be of benefit, it is evident that to build a resilient workforce, occupational and environmental factors must be addressed. Further research including social care workers and analysis of wider societal structural factors is recommended.
Long-Term Air Pollution, Genetic Susceptibility, and the Risk of Depression and Anxiety: A Prospective Study in the UK Biobank Cohort
Depression and anxiety are two mental disorders that are often comorbid. However, the associations of long-term air pollution exposure with depression and anxiety remain inconclusive. We conducted a cross-sectional and prospective study to examine the associations of ambient exposure to particulate matter (PM) with a diameter of ( ), ( ), and ( ), nitrogen oxides ( ), and nitrogen dioxide ( ) with the risk of depression and anxiety in the UK Biobank. This study included 398,241 participants from the UK Biobank, 128,456 of whom participated the 7-y online mental health survey. A total of 345,876 individuals were free of depression and anxiety at baseline; of those, 16,185 developed incident mental disorders during a median of 8.7 y of follow-up. Depression and anxiety were assessed using hospital admission records and mental health questionnaires. Associations of air pollution with prevalent and incident mental disorders were examined using logistic regression and Cox regression models, respectively. Elevated levels of the five air pollutants were associated with higher odds of mental disorders at baseline. Levels of four pollutants but not were also associated with higher odds and risks of mental disorders during follow-up; specifically, hazard ratios [HR, 95% confidence interval (CI)] of an interquartile range increase in , , , and for incident mental disorders were 1.03 (95% CI: 1.01, 1.05), 1.06 (95% CI: 1.04, 1.08), 1.03 (95% CI: 1.01, 1.05), and 1.06 (95% CI: 1.04, 1.09), respectively. An air pollution index reflecting combined effects of pollutants also demonstrated a positive association with the risk of mental disorders. HR (95% CI) of incident mental disorders were 1.11 (95% CI: 1.05, 1.18) in the highest quintile group in comparison with the lowest quintile of the air pollution index. We further observed that the associations between air pollution and mental disorders differed by a genetic risk score based on single nucleotide polymorphisms previously associated with genetic susceptibility to mental disorders in the UK Biobank cohort. To our knowledge, this research is one of the largest cohort studies that demonstrates an association between mental health disorders and exposure to long-term air pollution, which could be further enhanced by genetic predisposition. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP10391.

Environmental pollution is associated with increased risk of psychiatric disorders in the US and Denmark
The search for the genetic factors underlying complex neuropsychiatric disorders has proceeded apace in the past decade. Despite some advances in identifying genetic variants associated with psychiatric disorders, most variants have small individual contributions to risk. By contrast, disease risk increase appears to be less subtle for disease-predisposing environmental insults. In this study, we sought to identify associations between environmental pollution and risk of neuropsychiatric disorders. We present exploratory analyses of 2 independent, very large datasets: 151 million unique individuals, represented in a United States insurance claims dataset, and 1.4 million unique individuals documented in Danish national treatment registers. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) county-level environmental quality indices (EQIs) in the US and individual-level exposure to air pollution in Denmark were used to assess the association between pollution exposure and the risk of neuropsychiatric disorders. These results show that air pollution is significantly associated with increased risk of psychiatric disorders. We hypothesize that pollutants affect the human brain via neuroinflammatory pathways that have also been shown to cause depression-like phenotypes in animal studies.
