Inside the Primary Classroom
In recent years primary education has been the subject of continuing debate with questions of standards and their apparent decline being raised with alarming regularity. Central in informing these debates has been the ORACLE study of groupwork in primary classrooms. Published during the 1980s, the study described in detail the daily life of the primary classroom, the teaching styles used by teachers and the responses of pupils. That research has now been replicated - with over two thirds of the schools originally studied being revisited, using the same tests and observation instruments. This book presents the findings of this second round of research, and is therefore unique in being able authoritatively to document the changes - or lack of them - in primary education and teaching practice over the last twenty years.

A highly practical resource for special educators and classroom teachers, this book provides specific instructional guidance illustrated with vignettes, examples, and sample lesson plans. Every chapter is grounded in research and addresses the nuts and bolts of teaching math to students who are not adequately prepared for the challenging middle school curriculum. Presented are a range of methods for helping struggling learners build their understanding of foundational concepts, master basic skills, and develop self-directed problem-solving strategies. While focusing on classroom instruction, the book also includes guidelines for developing high-quality middle school mathematics programs and evaluating their effectiveness.
Measuring what counts : a conceptual guide for mathematics assessment
This book reports the analyses and recommendations of a study group formed by the National Research Council to develop conceptual guidelines that make content the driving force in mathematics assessment reform and to explore a variety of related measurement and policy issues. The document focuses on three principles that underlie effective educational assessment: the content principle, the learning principle, and the equity principle. Chapter 1 presents a vision of school mathematics as described in the current reform movement. Chapter 2 discusses the role of assessment in reform and proposes the three principles of assessing mathematics learning. Chapters 3-5 examine the impact that the principles have on the design of mathematical assessments, the learning that takes place in the classroom, and in supporting equal opportunities for all children to learn mathematics. Chapter 6 discusses how to evaluate educational assessments. The remainder of the book is comprised of three commissioned papers: (1) \"Effects of Mandated Testing on Instruction\" (Lynn Hancock and Jeremey Kilpatrick); (2) \"Design Innovations in Measuring Mathematics Achievement\" (Stephen Dunbar and Elizabeth Witt); and (3) \"Legal and Ethical Issues in Mathematics Assessment\" (Diana Pullin). Reference lists accompany each chapter and paper. A policy brief under a separate cover contains a summary of the main document. (MDH)
