Ontologies of rock art : images, relational approaches and indigenous knowledges
2021
\"Ontologies of Rock Art is the first publication exploring a wide range of ontological approaches to rock art interpretation, constituting the basis for ground-breaking studies on Indigenous knowledges, relational metaphysics, and rock imageries. The book contributes to the growing body of research on the ontology of images by focusing on five main topics: ontology as a theoretical framework; the development of new concepts and methods for an ontological approach to rock art; the examination of the relationships between ontology, images and Indigenous knowledges; the development of relational models for the analysis of rock images; and the impact of ontological approaches on different rock art traditions across the world. Generating new avenues of research in ontological theory, political ontology and rock art research, this collection will be relevant to archaeologists, anthropologists, and philosophers. In the context of an increasing interest in Indigenous ontologies, the volume will also be of interest to scholars in Indigenous Studies\"-- Provided by publisher.
ARTE RUPESTRE Y EMPLAZAMIENTOS ARQUEOLÓGICOS: APORTES A LOS ESTUDIOS DE INTERACCIÓN EN LA QUEBRADA DE LAS CONCHAS (SALTA)
2024
The aim of this paper is to analyze the associations between the sites, the rock art and the recorded archaeological evidence, in order to estimate which territorial dynamics have been related to the mobility circuits of the various groups within the ravine and the nearby micro-regions. Terrestrial prospecting and unmanned aerial flights have been carried out, for the elaboration of planimetry and photographic survey of the panels with art. The research field and the evidence recorded have made it possible to detect new sites associated with different functionalities, such as residential areas, roads, burial sites, and panels ofrupestrian art, which are located in strategic places.

Prehistoric rock art : polemics and progress
\"Prehistoric rock art is the markings - paintings, engravings, or pecked images - left on rocks or cave walls by ancient peoples. In this book, Paul G. Bahn provides a richly illustrated overview of prehistoric rock art and cave art from around the world. Summarizing the recent advances in our understanding of this extraordinary visual record, he discusses new discoveries, new approaches to recording and interpretation, and current problems in conservation. Bahn focuses in particular on current issues in the interpretation of rock art, notably the \"shamanic\" interpretation that has been influential in recent years and that he refutes. This book is based on the Rhind Lectures that the author delivered for the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in 2006\"-- Provided by publisher.
MOVILIDAD Y RITUALIDAD PASTORIL. PROPUESTA DE IDENTIFICACIÓN DE ARTE RUPESTRE PERFORMADO POR PASTORES LOCALES EN EL SUR DE POZUELOS, 900-1535 DC (PUNA DE JUJUY, ARGENTINA)
Arte rupestre, Trashumancia, Tráfico caravanero, Prácticas rituales - Puna de Jujuy Abstract In the present work, we intend to deepen the study of the articulation strategies of pastoral practices of transhumance as well as the caravan traffic in the microregion of the southern sector of the Pozuelos basin (Jujuy Puna, Argentina). From the analysis of seven archaeological sites with rock manifestations, the ways in which the two practices were combined were defined from a focus on stylistic, contextual and landscape expressions based on rock art. The results obtained through the analysis of these rock landscapes allow us to identify the emergence of different types of \"places\" related to these practices, where the ways of doing and conceiving art would respond mainly to a local development.

by
Muñoz, S Camila
in
Petroglyphs
2020
ABSTRACT This work presents the results obtained from seven rock art sites from the area of Southern Patagonia, Chile: four in the continent and three in the channels, to which the data of 44 deposits from different bibliographical sources were integrated. Based on the quantitative and statistical analysis carried out on three different scales composed by the motif (micro), the panel (meso) and the site (macro), the aim is to deepen, for the first time, the comparison of the contexts from the channels and the continent of the Magallanes region, in order to understand the possible information exchange and visual codes between the different groups that inhabited that region. Rock Art, Continental Patagonia, Channels, Information Exchange, Visual Codes.

Images and power : rock art and ethics
\"Images and Power: Rock Art and Ethics addresses the distinctive ways in which ethical considerations pertain to rock art research within the larger context of the archaeological ethical debate. Marks on stone, with their social and religious implications, give rise to distinctive ethical concerns within the scholarly enterprise as different perceptions between scholars and Native Americans are encountered in regard to worldviews, concepts of space, time, and in the interpretation of the imagery itself. This discourse addresses issues such as the conflicting paradigms of oral traditions and archaeological veracity, differing ideas about landscapes in which rock art occurs, the intrusion of \"desired knowledge\", and how the past may be robbed by changing interpretations and values on both sides. Case studies are presented in regard to shamanism and war-related imagery. Also addressed are issues surrounding questions of art, aesthetics, and appropriation of imagery by outsiders. Overall, this discourse attempts to clarify points of contention between Euro-American scholars and Native Americans so that we can better recognize the origins of differences and thus promote better mutual understanding in these endeavors.\"--Publisher's website.
Geoglifo, Costa atlántica, Patagonia, Arte rupestre, Arqueología Abstract Rock art in coastal maritime areas is a widely recorded fact in different regions of the world. The finding posed methodological challenges; among them: ruling out the natural origin of the marks, identify the operational chain and the site formation processes, explore the existence of other similar sites in the intertidal sector of the coast and establish similarities and differences with the rock art known in North Central Patagonia, as well as estimate its temporal range. The results of the research allow the discovery to be placed in a time period between 3500 BP and the first decades of the 20th century, ruling out its natural or accidental anthropic origin.
