Who ever said being nice would get you to the top? Certainly not Alexandra Miles. She isn't nice, but she's more than skilled at playing the part. She's queen of Spencer High, effortlessly orchestrating the actions of everyone around her, making them bend to her whim without noticing what they are doing. Alexandra's first step to achieving total domination is to become Homecoming Queen--so when peppy, popular Erin Hewett moves to town and seems to have a real shot at the crown, Alexandra has to take action. With the help of her trusted friend Sam, she decides to introduce a third competitor into the mix--one no one saw coming, one whose meteoric rise and devastating fall will destroy Erin's chances once and for all. Alexandra can run a scheme like this in her sleep. What could possibly go wrong?
Toward an internally consistent pressure scale
Our ability to interpret seismic observations including the seismic discontinuities and the density and velocity profiles in the earth's interior is critically dependent on the accuracy of pressure measurements up to 364 GPa at high temperature. Pressure scales based on the reduced shock-wave equations of state alone may predict pressure variations up to 7% in the megabar pressure range at room temperature and even higher percentage at high temperature, leading to large uncertainties in understanding the nature of the seismic discontinuities and chemical composition of the earth's interior. Here, we report compression data of gold (Au), platinum (Pt), the NaCl-B2 phase, and solid neon (Ne) at 300 K and high temperatures up to megabar pressures. Combined with existing experimental data, the compression data were used to establish internally consistent thermal equations of state of Au, Pt, NaCl-B2, and solid Ne. The internally consistent pressure scales provide a tractable, accurate baseline for comparing high pressure-temperature experimental data with theoretical calculations and the seismic observations, thereby advancing our understanding fundamental high-pressure phenomena and the chemistry and physics of the earth's interior.

Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry variants for metabolomics research
Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC–HRMS) variants currently represent the best tools to tackle the challenges of complexity and lack of comprehensive coverage of the metabolome. UHPLC offers flexible and efficient separation coupled with high-sensitivity detection via HRMS, allowing for the detection and identification of a broad range of metabolites. Here we discuss current common strategies for UHPLC–HRMS-based metabolomics, with a focus on expanding metabolome coverage. This Review surveys ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC–HRMS), a highly sensitive, high-throughput technique that is used for analyzing a broad range of metabolites.

The Effect of High Pressure Techniques on the Stability of Anthocyanins in Fruit and Vegetables
Anthocyanins are a group of phenolic compounds responsible for red, blue and violet colouration of many fruits, vegetables and flowers. The high content of these pigments is important as it influences directly their health promoting properties as well as the sensory quality of the product; however they are prone to degradation by, inter alia, elevated temperature and tissue enzymes. The traditional thermal methods of food preservation cause significant losses of these pigments. Thus, novel non-thermal techniques such as high pressure processing, high pressure carbon dioxide and high pressure homogenization are under consideration. In this review, the authors attempted to summarize the current knowledge of the impact of high pressure techniques on the stability of anthocyanins during processing and storage of fruit and vegetable products. Furthermore, the effect of the activity of enzymes involved in the degradation of these compounds has been described. The conclusions including comparisons of pressure-based methods with high temperature preservation techniques were presented.

In Situ High-Pressure X-ray Diffraction and Raman Spectroscopy Study of Ti3C2Tx MXene
The lattice stability and phonon response of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene at high pressure are important for understanding its mechanical and thermal properties fully. Here, we use in situ high hydrostatic pressure X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy to study the lattice deformation and phonon behavior of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. XRD spectra indicate that no phase transformation occurs up to the pressure of 26.7 GPa. The elastic constant along a lattice parameter was calculated to be 378 GPa. In the Raman spectra obtained at high-pressure, the out-of-plane phonon modes ( A 1g at ~ 210, ~ 504, and ~ 711 cm −1 ) exhibit monotonic blueshifts with increasing pressure. The Grüneisen parameters of these three modes were calculated to be 1.08, 1.16, and 0.29, respectively. These results enrich the basic property data of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene and would benefit the further understanding of this novel material.

Spatiotemporal Characteristics and Large-Scale Environments of Mesoscale Convective Systems East of the Rocky Mountains
The spatiotemporal variability and three-dimensional structures of mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) east of the U.S. Rocky Mountains and their large-scale environments are characterized across all seasons using 13 years of high-resolution radar and satellite observations. Long-lived and intense MCSs account for over 50% of warm season precipitation in the Great Plains and over 40% of cold season precipitation in the southeast. The Great Plains has the strongest MCS seasonal cycle peaking in May–June, whereas in the U.S. southeast MCSs occur year-round. Distinctly different large-scale environments across the seasons have significant impacts on the structure of MCSs. Spring and fall MCSs commonly initiate under strong baroclinic forcing and favorable thermodynamic environments. MCS genesis frequently occurs in the Great Plains near sunset, although convection is not always surface based. Spring MCSs feature both large and deep convection, with a large stratiform rain area and high volume of rainfall. In contrast, summer MCSs often initiate under weak baroclinic forcing, featuring a high pressure ridge with weak low-level convergence acting on the warm, humid air associated with the low-level jet. MCS genesis concentrates east of the Rocky Mountain Front Range and near the southeast coast in the afternoon. The strongest MCS diurnal cycle amplitude extends from the foothills of the Rocky Mountains to the Great Plains. Summer MCSs have the largest and deepest convective features, the smallest stratiform rain area, and the lowest rainfall volume. Last, winter MCSs are characterized by the strongest baroclinic forcing and the largest MCS precipitation features over the southeast. Implications of the findings for climate modeling are discussed.
