كانت الرحلة من الظواهر الرئيسة في حياة العصور الوسطى وكانت دوافعها متعددة وغايات الرحالين مختلفة وإذا ما تم إستعراض زيارات الأوروبيين لفلسطين خاصة وللشرق العربي عامة يخرج الباحث لفهم لهذه البواعث والمقاصر وإلى هذا فقد اختلفت بواعث السفر والتنقل ورغبات الناس بإختلاف الأزمنة والأحوال التاريخية ويمكن عرض ذلك كما يلي \"من القرن الرابع إلى القرن العاشر\" و\"في زمن الحروب الصليبية\" و\"في القرنين الرابع عشر والخامس عشر\" والذي يمكن الوقوف عليه وقبل كل شيء أن الحج كان الباحث الأول والرئيسي في الفترة الأولى وأن كان ثمة باعث آخر فقد جاء عفوا أو كان قليل الأثر في توجيه الرحلة.
