يعطي شتراوس درسا نموذجيا في معنى العلم وأخلاقية المعرفة، حيث الاكتشاف العلمي يتأمل زمنه، ويوقظ في العالم حلم التعرف على الأزمنة السحيقة. ولهذا، فإن شتراوس يرى في \"المجتمع البدائي\" موضوعا رحبا للمعرفة، يطرح عليه أسئلة ويستولد منه أسئلته الخاصة به، متكئا على مبدأ الاعتراف المتبادل، الذي يحرض الإنسان على التعلم من غيره وتعليمه في آن. ولعل هذا المبدأ هو الذي يجعل شتراوس، في كتابه هذا وغيره، يؤمن بالتعددية الثقافية الإنسانية، ويرى في المتعدد الثقافي مبتدأ للإبداع والابتكار. وهو لا يفعل ذلك إلا بسبب إيمانه العميق بنسبية المعرفة، التي ترفض التعصب والإيمانية المغلقة، وتؤكد الحضارة الإنسانية أثرا لجهد جماعي إنساني، يتناتج منذ زمن سحيق.
