لقد قسم روسو هذا الكتاب إلي خمسة كتب كل منها يتحدث عن مرحلة من المراحل وقد بدأ روسو كتابته في هذا القسم بالمطالبة بجعل وظيفة التربية من البداية مقصورة علي إزالة الصعوبات وكل ما يعوق الطبيعة البشرية الخيرة عن النمو الطبيعي وهذا ما يطلق عليه روسو بالتربية السلبية وهو يتحدث عن عوامل التربية ويقول أنها ثلاثة طبيعة الطفل ثم المعلم ثم الحياة نفسها.
