يتألف هذا الكتاب من جزأين حيث نجد بين دفتي الجزء الأول منه أعمال الروائيين الأبرز في القرنين التاسع عشر والعشرين الميلاديين لدراسة شكل المونولوج ومدى تغيره وتطوره من كاتب إلى آخر، فعلى خلاف ستاندال وبالزاك اللذين يتموضع المونولج لديهما ضمن تقليد المونولج المسرحي السقراطي ونرى هوغو الشاعر والروائي الفرنسي كان شكل المونولوج لديه يشبه \"عاصفة تحت الجمجمة\" وفقا للعنوان الشهير لرائعته البؤساء فهو لا يعتمد في أعماله على سارد كلي المعرفة لمكمون قلوب الآخرين لكونها مستحيلة، لا بل هي ملكة إلهية بحتة. وهوغو لا يروي لنا تفاصيل عن شخصياته كما بالزاك وعادة ما تكون شخصياته صامتة ومجهولة حتى إنها تدعى بأسماء مستعارة في بعض الأحيان وغالبا ما تكون حائرة مترددة لا تعرف ذاتها.
