أخذ عنوان هذه الرواية من مسرحية ريتشارد الثالث لشكسبير حيث تحل لعنة شبح الملكة آنا على الملك الذي قتلها ولكن أحداث الرواية تدور في مدريد وفي أيامنا هذه وعلى لسان فيكتور فرانش كاتب سيناريو للسينما والتلفزيون ويترزق من كتابة المقالات له ولغيره ويتعرف فيكتور على مارتا امرأة متزوجة تدعوه إلى بيتها حين يسافر زوجها إلى لندن للعمل بعد أن ينام ابنها وبعد أولى القبلات بينهما تصاب مارتا بوعكة صحية مفاجأة لتموت بعدها خلال دقائق بين ذراعي فيكتور.
