نظرية الطبقة المترفة هوا عبارة عن بحث اقتصادي ونقد اجتماعي مفصل للاستهلاك الظاهر، كوظيفة للنزعة الاستهلاكية للطبقة الاجتماعية، التي تقترح أن الطبقة الاجتماعية وتقسيم العمل في العصر الاقطاعي استمر حتى العصر الحديث. يشغل ملاك العزب أنفسهم في ممارسات الاستهلاك الظاهر والترفيه الغير مجدي اقتصاديا، بينما الطبقة المتوسطة والعاملة منخرطة في المهن الصناعية التي تدعم المجتمع بأكمله؛ الأنشطة المسرفة اقتصاديا هي تلك الأنشطة التي لا تسهم في الاقتصاد أو الانتاجية المادية المطلوبة للتوظيف المثمر للمجتمع. تحليل ڤبلن لدائرة العمل والأسعار، والقسم التقنقراطي من العمل بواسطة المتخصصين (العلماء، المهندسين، والتقنيين) في بداية القرن 20 ثبت أنه تنبؤ دقيق لطبيعة المجتمع الصناعي.
