قام برحلة عام 1908 إلى مكة المكرمة وارتدى ملابس المسلمين وتكنى باسم (الحاج علي الزنجباري) وروى لنا وقائع مسلية حول رحلته ضمن قالب ممتع من المغامرات والمواقف الطريفة، مع وصف حي ودقيق لجميع المناطق التي زارها، يذكر أنه التزم جانب الحياد والاحترام الموضوعية فيما كتبه. وكانت زيارته في تلك الأيام مغامرة خطيرة مثل أي مغامرة يمكن أن يختارها. وسجل النجاح الذي توج جهوده عام 1908.
