مقدمة ابن خلدون أشهر من أن تعرف، فهي من أعظم ما كتب في العصور الإسلامية حول ما يسمى الآن : (علم الاجتماع) وفلسفة التاريخ، وسماه ابن خلدون لأن الضعف العلمي والثقافي الذي جاء بعده لم يكن يتيح الفرصة لاكتشاف أهمية مثل هذا العمل وفي هذه المقدمة أرسى ابن خلدون قواعد فقه التاريخ وعلم العمران وهو علم أغثره عليه الله كما يقول ولم يقف على الكلام في منحاه لأحد من الخليقة.
