يمكن تعريف علم أصول الفقه بأنه العلم بالقواعد التي يتوصل بها إلى استنباط الأحكام الشرعية الفرعية عن أدلتها التفصيلية. وقد قعد الإمام أحمد بن حنبل قواعدا لهذا العلم وكان له مصنف اختصره ابن اللحام في هذا الكتاب موضحا رموزه وغوامضه ولكن دون أن يخوض في التعليل والدلائل، مع الإشارة إلى ما جرى فيه من اختلاف أو إجماع على بعض المسائل، مرتبا الكتاب ترتيب كتب علم الأصول. ومجيبا على بعض الأسئلة التي وردت إليه حول هذا العلم.
