يعد كتاب الموشح من أقدم الكتب العربية النقدية الهامة. عرض فيه المرزباني مآخذه ومآخذ اللغويين والأدباء والنحاة على الشعراء القدامى وشعراء عصره من المحدثين وقد حدد المرزباني في مقدمته مضمون الموشح وهدفه من تأليفه فقال : (وأودعت هذا الكتاب ما سهل وجوده، وأمكن جمعه، وقرب متناوله من ذكر عيوب الشعراء التي نبه عليها أهل العلم وأوضحوا الغلط فيها : من اللحن والسناد، والإيطاء، والإقواء، والتضمين، والكسر، والإحالة والتناقض، واختلاف اللفظ وهلهلة النسج وغير ذلك من سائر ما عيب على الشعراء قديمهم ومحدثيهم في أشعارهم خاصة.
