الكتاب عبارة عن تجميع لكتابات وحوارات مع كالفينو نشرت في كتب سابقة، باستثناء (اليوميات الأميركية)، ما يجعلها الأكثر أهمية بين 12 مادة جمعتها زوجته، إستر كالفينو، بعد أن وجدت مغلفا على مكتب زوجها بعد وفاته عام 1985، تحت عنوان (جزء من سيرة ذاتية)، وكانت كتابة سيرته في أثناء حياته قد تعثرت، أو هرب من مواجهتها إلى محاضراته ورواياته. لم ينشأ كالفينو في مدينة ثقافية صاخبة، مثل روما أو فلورنسا أو ميلانو التي استقر فيها عدد من الأدباء الإيطاليين، بل نزح من سان ريمو في إقليم ليغوريا المطل على البحر المتوسط إلى مدينة تورين غرب إيطاليا، وقد اختارها متعمدا، كما يقول في مفتتح نص منشور عام 1953، حيث إنه في تلك المدينة «غياب للرومانسية المفرطة.
