يعد هذا الكتاب من أشهر كتب الرحلات في التاريخ فقد عرف \"ابن بطوطة\" بكثرة أسفاره وبسبب شهرته العالمية لقبته جمعية كامبريدج\" ﺑ\"أمير الرحالة المسلمين\" وبدأ \"ابن بطوطة\" رحلته من (طنجة) مسقط رأسه، ناويا حج بيت الله الحرام، ورحل دون رفيق ولا قريب واتخذ في كل مدينة وقف فيها صاحبا، فحكى عنه وعن المدينة التي قابله فيها وقدر زمن رحلاته بما يقرب من الثلاثين عاما، وقد أملى على (ابن جزي الكلبي) تفاصيل تلك الرحلات ونوادرها، وبعدما انتهى من التدوين أطلق على مؤلفه هذا اسم \"تحفة النظار في غرائب الأمصار وعجائب الأسفار\".
