Hematology and serum biochemistry values in pacaranas (Dinomys branickii)

Overview
The pacarana (
Dinomys branickii
) is among the rarest of mammals under human care, with few research about the species health. This study is aimed at describing for the first time values for pacaranas under human care for commonly used hematologic and blood chemistry parameters. After the physical restraint, animals were anesthetized with a combination of dexmedetomidine, midazolam, and butorphanol for preventive medical exams. Based on phylogenetic and morphological proximity, the data from the present study were compared with data from a worldwide zoological databank, Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS) for chinchillas (
Chinchilla lanigera
), prehensile-tailed porcupines (
Coendou prehensilis
), and capybaras (
Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris
). For most of the hematological and biochemical values, pacaranas were similar to the data reported to prehensile-tailed porcupines. This information will be valuable for future initiatives to assess the health of individuals arriving in rehabilitation centers and kept in zoological institutions.
