The species exhibits a close phylogenetic relationship to C. haemulonii and is differentiated based on sequence analysis of the D1/D2 domain of the large ribosomal subunit (LSU) of 26S rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of the nuclear rRNA gene operon [23].
