Overview
From the late 1960's to the mid 70's, Sly and the Family Stone combined rock, R & B, psychedelia and funk to become one of the most popular bands of the time. With a lineup that featured blacks and whites and men and women, it broke social barriers as well. Last week, a two-CD set of many of the group's biggest hits was released. Here, Pharrell Williams, one half of the production duo the Neptunes and a member of the rock group N.E.R.D., reflects on the band and its leader, Sly Stone, now 59. Now, I know I'm not the only one who drank from Sly's well, since I hear his influence and genius in Michael, Stevie and Prince. It flows through Donny Hathaway and Donald Fagen. It's updated by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I've even been told that certain critics see Sly in my own work, in the bass line, rhythm and syncopation for songs my group, N.E.R.D., recorded like ''Run to the Sun,'' although it humbles me to think that people would group us together.
