Immigration, Ethnicity, and National Identity in Brazil, 1808 to the Present
Immigration, Ethnicity, and National Identity in Brazil, 1808 to the Present examines the immigration to Brazil of millions of Europeans, Asians and Middle Easterners beginning in the nineteenth century. Jeffrey Lesser analyzes how these newcomers and their descendants adapted to their new country and how national identity was formed as they became Brazilians along with their children and grandchildren. Lesser argues that immigration cannot be divorced from broader patterns of Brazilian race relations, as most immigrants settled in the decades surrounding the final abolition of slavery in 1888 and their experiences were deeply conditioned by ideas of race and ethnicity formed long before their arrival. This broad exploration of the relationships between immigration, ethnicity and nation allows for analysis of one of the most vexing areas of Brazilian study: identity.
Teachers' psychological characteristics: Do they matter for teacher effectiveness, teachers' well-being, retention, and interpersonal relations? An integrative review
This integrative review aims to render a systematic account of the role that teachers' psychological characteristics, such as their motivation and personality, play for critical outcomes in terms of teacher effectiveness, teachers' well-being, retention, and positive interpersonal relations with multiple stakeholders (e.g., students, parents, principals, colleagues). We first summarize and evaluate the available evidence on relations between psychological characteristics and these outcomes derived in existing research syntheses (meta-analyses, systematic reviews). We then discuss implications of the findings regarding the eight identified psychological characteristics-self-efficacy, causal attributions, expectations, personality, enthusiasm, emotional intelligence, emotional labor, and mindfulness-for research and educational practice. In terms of practical recommendations, we focus on teacher selection and the design of future professional development activities as areas that particularly profit from a profound understanding of the relative importance of different psychological teacher characteristics in facilitating adaptive outcomes. Recent advances in hydraulic characteristics and optimization of irrigation valves: A review
With the rapid growth of the global population and increasing pressures on freshwater resources, water scarcity has become one of the most pressing challenges worldwide. Agriculture accounts for approximately 70% of global freshwater consumption, making the efficient use of water in agricultural irrigation systems essential for sustainable water management. Irrigation valves, as key components in precision agricultural irrigation systems, critically influence the efficiency and reliability of water delivery through their hydraulic performance. This study presents a comprehensive quantitative review of the hydraulic characteristics and optimization of irrigation valves based on research published from 2005 to 2024, drawing from CNKI and Web of Science (WOS) databases. The review identifies research hotspots and evolving trends over time and systematically examines the evaluation indices used to assess hydraulic performance, including core parameters such as flow capacity, pressure loss, and cavitation, alongside important factors like noise, vibration, and sealing performance. Emphasizing advances in valve design, materials, and control methods, the analysis reveals that topological optimization has significantly enabled lightweight and efficient valve designs, composite coatings have greatly enhanced material durability, and optimized valve-closing strategies have effectively mitigated water hammer risks. The study concludes by outlining promising future directions for the hydraulic optimization of irrigation valves, aiming to provide valuable insights and reference points for ongoing and future research in water-efficient agricultural irrigation technologies.
Visual character development in film and television : your character is your canvas
\"This book takes a unique look at visual character development in motion pictures and television by using famous works of art combined with modern works of film and television to demonstrate how to weave a visual tale. In a single shot or scene, what should we reveal about a character? What should we conceal? How can we show a character's progression over time? In Visual Character Development in Film and Television, authors Michael Hanly and Elisabeth Rowney explain how to create compelling visual characters for the screen by analyzing fine art aesthetics and combining them with modern cinematic techniques. Full-color chapters cover character-driven approaches to costume design and makeup application, production design, cinematography and lighting, plot development, editing considerations, and more. By exploring how surroundings, habits, lifestyles - even the color of a sweater - can tell us more about a character on the screen than what can be said in dialogue alone, this book will prove a valuable resource for anyone wanting to take their filmmaking to the next level\"-- Provided by publisher.
The mind of the nation
The first comprehensive study of the topic. Follows the reception and impact of Völkerpsychologie, both in Germany and abroad. Traces the genealogy of concepts currently used in the social sciences and humanities, e.g. 'identity', and explains the circumstances of their inception. Challenges the notion that Völkerpsychologieis and/or was an uniquely German phenomenon.
Better Britons
In 1932, Aldous Huxley published Brave New World , his famous novel about a future in which humans are produced to spec in laboratories. Around the same time, Australian legislators announced an ambitious experiment to “breed the colour” out of Australia by procuring white husbands for women of white and indigenous descent. In this study, Nadine Attewell reflects on an assumption central to these and other policy initiatives and cultural texts from twentieth-century Britain, Australia, and New Zealand: that the fortunes of the nation depend on controlling the reproductive choices of citizen-subjects. Better Britons charts an innovative approach to the politics of reproduction by reading an array of works and discourses – from canonical modernist novels and speculative fictions to government memoranda and public debates – that reflect on the significance of reproductive behaviours for civic, national, and racial identities. Bringing insights from feminist and queer theory into dialogue with work in indigenous studies, Attewell sheds new light on changing conceptions of British and settler identity during the era of decolonization.
