Qur'ans of the Umayyads : a first overview
\"For the first time, the dramatic changes the Qur'anic code underwent during the Umayyad period (660-750 C.E.) are analysed and presented on the basis of a selection of material in good part unpublished. In 'Qur'ans of the Umayyads', François Déroche offers a chronology of the various developments which marked the period, in an approach combining philology, art history, codicology and palaeography. The conclusions he reaches challenge the traditional account about the writing down of the Qur'an and throw a new light on the role of the Umayyads in its handwritten diffusion.\" -- Back cover.

The Heroides, or Letters of Heroines, is a collection of twenty-one fictional letters composed by the famous Augustan poet Ovid (43 BC-AD 17/18). It is a widely read work of elegiac poetry which is of special interest to students of gender literature. The poems, which take the form of fifteen letters from heroines to their absent lovers and three pairs of letters to a lover with a reply, have frequently been edited and translated into English in both prose and verse. The present volume offers a databank for the final six poems in the collection, the three pairs of letters from and to a hero and a heroine. The material here presented is essential for understanding the way in which the text has been established. It is arranged in the form of an enlarged critical apparatus so that the reader will have no difficulty in finding information relevant to an enquiry.
Texts beyond borders : multilingualism and textual scholarship
\"Contacts between languages, especially translations, have always played a crucial role in the making of European culture, from Antiquity until today. Bilingual or multilingual documents, literary works created in another language than their creators' mother tongue, translations and translated texts are special textual objects, which require appropriate editorial treatment. This volume explores how textual scholarship responds to multilingualism in its various forms; how important multilingualism can be in creative processes; how textual scholarship can make multilingual texts available and accessible; and how it can contribute to their interpretation\"--Page 4 of cover.
2020
The text-critical discussion about the originality of καί in Phil 2,4 (ἀλλὰ [καὶ] τὰ ἑτέρων) and the discussion around the understanding of the syntagma ἡ ἑαυτῶν σωτηρία in 2,12 have reached a dead end. In order to bring both discussions forward, the present contribution will link the two issues together more closely. This is in response to the observation that both questions reveal a common vanishing point. This vanishing point consists in the fact that the respective answers have a significant influence on the assessment of an overarching, ethical-parenetic question: To what extent did Paul, in his instructions for action surrounding the Christ Hymn in 1,27–2,18, which are essentially oriented towards the well-being of others, not only presuppose aspects of caring for oneself, but also specifically allude to such aspects in the text of the Epistle itself, thus granting them their own, albeit small, space? If such traces can be found, the argumentation-strategic function of this balancing is to be ascertained for the Pauline way of thinking in 1,27–2,18.

Deuteronomistic history (Biblical criticism)
2009
Jeffrey H. Tigay, A. M. Ellis Professor of Hebrew and Semitic Languages and Literatures at the University of Pennsylvania, master teacher and scholar extraordinaire, conservative rabbi and lifelong student of Torah receives due ovation in this exceptional volume, a tribute to his indelible impression on Jewish scholarship and pedagogy.
The volume is arranged according to Professor Tigay's primary topics of interest: deuteronomic studies, ancient Israelite religion and its Near Eastern context, and ancient Israelite literary tradition. The reader will enjoy diverse studies such as \"Gender Transformation and Transgression: Contextualizing the Prohibition of Cross-dressing in Deuteronomy 22:5,\" \"The Problem of Evil in the Book of Job,\" and \"Linen and the Linguistic Dating of P\" and will value the erudition of scholars such as Moshe Greenberg, Emanuel Tov, Gary Rendsburg, William Hallo, and Baruch Levine.
In the customary appreciations and throughout the volume, colleagues, students, and friends laud Professor Tigay's intellectual tenacity, relational warmth, pedagogical prowess, and devotion to Torah. A former student aptly speaks for those who know him best: \"A scholar's immortality lies in his or her work. It rests too in his or her students and in the respect won from his or her colleagues. A Festschrift like this one for Jeff Tigay is merely a token of that legacy, the acknowledgment by his students and colleagues that the work is indeed worth celebrating.\" This legacy will surely be a boon and delight to the reader.
A Message from the Great King

The academy has not been kind to Malachi. Indeed, some of the most influential and seminal studies on the book denigrate its style, message, and overall artistry. This negative assessment proves extensive in the history of scholarship. Furthermore, the studies demonstrating a more positive assessment of Malachi do so without offering serious challenges to these long-standing denigrations. Complicating the matter is the observation that critical study has proffered numerous suggestions for what Malachi contains while failing to provide a viable model of what Malachi actually is.
A Message from the Great King presents serious challenges to the guild's prior assessments and conclusions about the book. Through an interdisciplinary approach that synthesizes insights from literary theory, thorough historical reconstruction, and a close reading of the biblical text, R. Michael Fox makes a formidable case that a root messenger metaphor pervades the entire text of Malachi. Viewed and read through this new lens, Malachi's artistry becomes more readily apparent and its theological message more intense and demanding. A Message from the Great King provides serious reassessment of the academy's long-standing denigrations of the book and a compelling answer to what Malachi actually is. Accompanying these insights into Malachi are new methodological procedures and exercises that merit further attention and reflection.
