يحكى الكتاب عن حياة الصحفي الراحل محمد التابعي: خطر لي خاطر وأنا أكتب كلماتي إلى الرئيس الراحل : ما هذا الخاطر؟ . لقد ترك التابعي مذكرات بخط يده وهي مذكرات سياسية تحتاج إلى ربط فصولها وهي ليست مهمتي، لأنني لم أعاصر الأحداث أنها مهمة صحفي، عاصر الأحداث وأن يكون على مستوى المسئولية والأمانة الصحفية. وللأسف الشديد ليس أمامي من أعهد إليه بهذه المهمة في كل الحقل الصحفي. أقول خطر ببالي أن أرسل هذه المذكرات السيادة الرئيس الراحل وأطلب منه أن يسلم الأمانة لمن يختاره هو شخصيا ويثق به وأكون بذلك قد حققت للتابعي حلما كان يتمنى تحقيقه، ولكن المرض لم يساعده-والموت لم يمهله.
