كتاب تاريخي وهو مختصر وهو يتضمن فترة من بداية الخلافة إلى نهاية العصر العباسي تبنى السيوطي في هذا الكتاب رواية أهل السنة والجماعة عموما في تصنيف الخلفاء والخلافة ويعتمد في روايته على كتب كبار المؤرخين عند أهل السنة وعلى رأسهم ابن كثير والذهبي فالكاتب صاحب نظرة مركزية للعالم الإسلامي والتي تتمثل في الاعتراف بالخلفاء الراشيدين في المدينة والكوفة والأمويين في الشام والعباسيين في بغداد وسامراء والقاهرة وهو مذهب معظم أهل الشرق الأوسط.
