هذه الدراسة هي مساهمة في النقاش الدائر بشأن حل الدولة وحل الدولتين، وخصوصا إزاء انسداد أفق التسوية والأزمة التفاوضية المتواصلة. فحل الدولتين أجهزت عليه حكومات إسرائيل المتعاقبة، وأصبح عصيا على التحقيق، من دون أن يكون حل الدولة الواحدة ممكنا أو قابلا للتحقيق. وعوضا عن المشاريع المتعثرة يقترح الكاتب الانتقال من التفكير في الحلول إلى التفكير في الأدوات، وفي علاقات القوة. إلى جانب المستوى التحليلي، تقدم الدراسة مراجعة قصيرة لتاريخ فكرة الدولة الواحدة في كل من السياسة والفكر اليهودي والصهيوني من جهة، وفي الفكر السياسي الفلسطيني من جهة أخرى، عارضة نقاط التقاطع والافتراق. تهدف الدراسة إلى إغناء الفكر السياسي الفلسطيني وفتح آفاق النقاش خارج الأطر المكررة وخارج حدود حركتها الراهنة بين حل الدولة وحل الدولتين.
