لو أن «ابن الرومي» أراد أن يحدثنا عن نفسه وعصره ما كان سيزيد شيئا عما قاله العقاد حيث استطاع بأسلوبه المتميز أن يرسم صورة شاعر من أفضل شعراء العصر العباسي، وأكثرهم تأثيرا. ولم يكتف العقاد بتتبع سيرته فقط، بل رأى بثاقب نظره أن الصورة لا تكتمل إلا إذا عرض لعصر \"ابن الرومي\". وحياة \"ابن الرومي\" هي حلقة متصلة من توالي المصائب والمآسي ؛ فقد جمع بين الفاقة بعد الغنى، وبين موت الأحباب والأولاد ؛ مما انعكس على شعره، فكان لا يرى في الحياة أملا. وقد تميز العقاد في تحليله لشعره ؛ فبين ما فيه من قوة وضعف، وما استخدمه من أساليب ومعان، كما حلى شخصيته وتعمق في فلسفته ؛ فكان الكتاب صورة حية لشاعر لا زال يسمو بشعره فوق كثير من الشعراء.
