تحكي الرواية أن بعد عزلة ومعاناة بسبب وفاة والده وهرب أخته، يلتقي مزارع الدواجن تشننسو بحب حياته ندالي. ورغم أنها لا تؤمن بالطبقية الاجتماعية، إلا أن أهلها يعارضون بشدة ارتباطها بمزارع فقير لا يحمل شهادة جامعية. لذا يبيع تشننسو كل ما يملك ليسافر إلى قبرص ويحصل على تلك الشهادة، ولكنه سيكتشف هناك أنه وقع ضحية محتال أخذ كل نقوده وجنى عمره وسلم مصيره للمجهول. هذه الحكاية البسيطة، كما قد تبدو، يرويها القرين الحامي لتشننسو، الروح التي يؤمن شعب الإيبو أنها ترافق الإنسان منذ يتكون جنينا وحتى يفارق الحياة. وهذا الراوي الفريد سيروي لنا الحكاية بأسلوب عجائبي وروحاني فريد، كما سيأخذنا إلى عوالم ثقافة الإيبو ونظرتهم إلى الكون وإلى الإنسان.
