تتناول هذه الرواية الفريدة التأثيرات الاجتماعية للحرب العالمية الأولى، وفترة بين الحربين ؛ هذه الفترة التي أنتجت لنا أعمالا أوروبية شهيرة عديدة، وعلى رأسها هذا العمل. كتب يوسف نبيل في مقدمة الرواية : فتاة مكتب البريد: جوهرة زفايج المنقوصة. لم يكتب زفايج روايات كبيرة الحجم سوى روايتين تقريبا: احذر من الشفقة، وهذه الرواية التي لم تنشر إبان حياته، ووجدوها وسط بقايا أوراقه ومخطوطاته الأدبية بعد انتحاره، ولم تنشر في ألمانيا إلا بحلول عام 1982 بعنوان : \"نشوة التحول\"، ولم تترجم إلى الإنجليزية إلا في عام 2002.
