Overview
يطلق على الحيوان الذي يكون الشعب المرجانية لفظ حيوان المرجان. وهو حيوان من اللافقاريات مثل الديدان ذات شكل أنبوبي يقوم باستخلاص مركبات الكالسيوم من ماء البحر ليكون غطاء الحماية الخاص به. وبعد قطع الشعب المرجانية وموت الأحياء بداخلها أو عليها يصبح لونها أبيض عاجيا وتفقد ألوانها عدا بعض الأنواع النادرة التي يكون هيكلها ملونا. التي فعند التصاق صغار المرجان بصخرة فإنها تبدأ في تكوين الغطاء الجيري المحيط بها، وإذا كانت الظروف والبيئة مناسبة فإنها تتكاثر بواسطة البراعم لتكون تجمعات مرجانية صغيرة.
