\"Diego Rivera's America revisits a historical moment when the famed muralist and painter, more than any other artist of his time, helped forge Mexican national identity in visual terms and imagined a shared American future in which unity, rather than division, was paramount. This volume accompanies a major exhibition highlighting Diego Rivera's work in Mexico and the United States from the early 1920s through the early 1940s. During this time in his extraordinary career, Rivera created a new vision for the Americas, on both national and continental levels, informed by his travels back and forth across the U.S.-Mexico border. Rivera's murals in Mexico and the U.S. serve as points of departure for a critical and contemporary understanding of one of the most aesthetically, socially, and politically ambitious artists of the twentieth century. Works featured include the greatest number of paintings and drawings from this period reunited since the artist's lifetime, presented alongside fresco panels, mural sketches, and cartoons. This catalogue serves as a guide to two crucial decades in Rivera's career, surfacing his most important themes, from traditional markets to modern industry, and devoting attention to iconic paintings as well as many other works that will be new even to scholars--revealing fresh insights into his artistic vision and process. This publication features original essays and reflections by authors from Mexico and the U.S., including curator James Oles as well as Maria Castro, Claire Fox, John Lear, and Sandra Zetina, with contributions by Dafne Cruz Porchini, Rachel Kaplan, and Adriana Zavala. Published in association with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Exhibition dates: San Francisco Museum of Modern Art: October 24, 2020-January 31, 2021 Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, Arkansas: July 24-October 17, 2021\"-- Provided by publisher.
The Sea Ranch : architecture, environment, and idealism
Situated on a ten-mile stretch of rugged Northern California coastline, The Sea Ranch was conceived as a retreat from urban living with connection to nature as a guiding principle. This striking book examines the development of the site's master plan and iconic early designs through sketches, drawings, and contemporary and archival photographs of its astonishing landscapes and distinctive timber-framed structures. A collection of essays that consider The Sea Ranch in relation to popular leisure destinations and within the context of the architectural history of California are accompanied by conversations with designers and others associated with the project from its inception. This book showcases the exemplary balance between land stewardship and modernist architecture that has made The Sea Ranch a model for living in harmony with nature.

Diane Arbus : in the beginning
\"Diane Arbus (1923-1971) is one of the most distinctive and provocative artists of the twentieth century. Her photographs of children and eccentrics, couples and circus performers, female impersonators and nudists, are among the most recognizable images of our time. This book is the definitive study of the artist's first seven years of work, from 1956 to 1962. Drawn primarily from the rich holdings of the Metropolitan Museum's Diane Arbus Archive--a remarkable treasury of photographs, negatives, appointment books, notebooks, and correspondence--it is an essential contribution to our understanding of Arbus and her oeuvre. diane arbus: in the beginning showcases over 100 of the artist's early photographs, more than half of which are published here for the first time. The book provides a crucial, in-depth presentation of the artist's genesis, showing Arbus as she developed her evocative and often haunting imagery. The photographs featured in this handsome volume reveal an artist defining her style, honing her subject matter, and in full possession of the many gifts for which she is now recognized the world over.\" -- Publisher's description.

\"Nam June Paik (1932-2006) was a visionary artist who foresaw the importance of mass media and new technology, and its impact on visual culture. His cutting-edge, innovative yet playfully entertaining work continues to be a major influence on art and culture to this day. -- This groundbreaking book focuses on Paik's pioneering role in radical aesthetics and experimental art. Bringing together works that span a five-decade career, and including archival materials and excerpts of Paik's own writings, it offers an in-depth understanding of the artist's trailblazing practice and his vision of a multidisciplinary future. This engaging book offers a fresh look at the exceptional works of Edvard Munch (1863-1944) by examining them in the light of his precarious mental state. Following a nervous breakdown in 1908, Munch underwent electroshock therapy, which prompted a marked change in his art work. The haunting Self-Portrait between the Clock and the Bed, finished one year before his death, represents a culmination of the themes of mortality, isolation, and anxiety that he explored repeatedly, and provides, in these pages, a perfect lens through which to view the artist's entire oeuvre. Informative essays consider Munch's position in the art world, his conception of self as a means of experimentation, and the psychological content of his paintings, while a previously unpublished foreword by the celebrated Norwegian novelist Karl Ove Knausgaard offers a new perspective on Munch's life and work. Featuring over 40 masterworks from throughout the painter's career, and an illustrated chronology that traces the progression of his emotional state and its influence on the images he created, this is an intimate, provocative study of an enigmatic artist and his remarkable legacy.
