This innovative monograph focuses on a contemporary form of computer-based literature called 'literary hypertext', a digital, interactive, communicative form of new media writing.  Canonizing Hypertext combines theoretical and hermeneutic investigations with empirical research into the motivational and pedagogic possibilities of this form of literature.  It focuses on key questions for literary scholars and teachers: How can literature be taught in such a way as to make it relevant for an increasingly hypermedia-oriented readership? How can the rapidly evolving new media be integrated into curricula that still seek to transmit ‘traditional' literary competence?  How can the notion of literary competence be broadened to take into account these current trends?  This study, which argues for hypertext's integration in the literary canon, offers a critical overview of developments in hypertext theory, an exemplary hypertext canon and an evaluation of possible classroom applications.

Combining both case studies and theoretical reflections, this book offers a varied range of assessments about digital conditions of philological inquiry. The book details instruments and processes of digital text criticism along with reflection on the increasingly unstable reconstructions of authorship and presence in e-philology.

The book tackles a number of challenging questions: How can we conceptualize architectural objects and practices without falling into the divides architecture/society, nature/culture, materiality/meaning? How can we prevent these abstractions from continuing to blind architectural theory? What is the alternative to critical architecture? Mapping controversies is a research method and teaching philosophy that allows divides to be crossed. It offers a new methodology for following debates surrounding contested urban knowledge. Engaging in explorations of on-going and recent controversies and re-visiting some well-known debates, the analysis foregrounds, traces and maps the changing sets of positions triggered by design: the 2012 Olympics stadium in London, the Welsh parliament in Cardiff, the Heathrow airport runway extension, the Sydney Opera House, the Eiffel Tower. By mobilizing digital technologies and new computational design techniques we are able to visualize the variety of factors that impinge on design and track actors’ trajectories, changing groupings, concerns and modalities of action. The book places architecture at the intersection of the human and the nonhuman, the particular and the general. It allows its networks to be re-established and to run between local and global, social and technical. Mapping controversies can be extrapolated to a wide range of complex phenomena of hybrid nature.

The Bible is the product of a complex process of oral and written transmissions that stretched across centuries and traditions. This implies ongoing revision of the “original” or oldest textual layers over the course of hundreds of years. Although critical scholarship recognizes this fact, debates abound regarding the reconstruction of the different layers, their date of composition and their historical backgrounds. Traditional methodologies have grappled with these challenges through textual and diachronic criticism, employing linguistic, stylistic, inner-biblical, archaeological and historical criteria. In this study, we use computer-assisted methods to address the question of authorship of biblical texts by employing statistical analysis that is particularly sensitive to deviations in word frequencies. Here, the term “word” may be generalized to “n-gram” (a sequence of words) or other countable text features. This paper consists of two parts. In the first part, we focus on differentiating between three distinct scribal corpora across numerous chapters in the Enneateuch, the first nine books of the Bible. Specifically, we examine 50 chapters labeled according to biblical exegesis considerations into three corpora: the old layer in Deuteronomy (D), texts belonging to the “Deuteronomistic History” in Joshua-to-Kings (DtrH), and the Priestly writings (P). For pragmatic reasons, we chose entire chapters, in which the number of verses potentially attributed to different authors or redactors is negligible. Without prior assumptions about author identity, our approach leverages subtle differences in word frequencies to distinguish among the three corpora and identify author-dependent linguistic properties. Our analysis indicated that the first two scribal corpora — (D, the oldest layers of Deuteronomy, and DtrH, the so-called Deuteronomistic History) — are much more closely related to each other than they are to the third, (P). This observation aligns with scholarly consensus. In addition, we attained high accuracy in attributing authorship by evaluating the similarity of each chapter to the reference corpora. In the second part of the paper, we report on our use of the three corpora as ground truth to examine other biblical texts whose authorship is disputed by biblical experts. Here, we demonstrate the potential contribution of insights achieved in the first part. Our paper sheds new light on the question of authorship of biblical texts by offering interpretable, statistically significant evidence of the existence of linguistic characteristics in the writing of biblical authors/redactors, that can be identified automatically. Our methodology thus provides a new tool to address disputed matters in biblical studies.

Abstract Scholars routinely discern the diachronic development of the book of Isaiah with a discreet focus on vocabulary, phrases, themes, and motifs. All but absent from consideration are the distribution and recurrence of grammatical, morphological, and syntactic features within the text. This study serves as a proof-of concept for the linguistic analysis of such features now available with the launch of the Tiberias Stylistic Classifier for the Hebrew Bible (https://tiberias.dicta.org.il/#/). Measuring and weighing the linguistic features of Isa 1-33 and Isa 40-55, the study brings to light the morphological and syntactic features most characteristic of each text corpus. The study also demonstrates that chs. 34 and 35 of Isaiah are much closer in morphology and syntax to chs. 1-33 than they are to chs. 40-55. The implications of these findings are examined in consideration of the scholarly debate concerning the provenance of these two chapters.
