Smart learning in smart cities
This book introduces readers to the current status of smart learning in China by providing extensive and accurate data from different contexts of smart learning. In particular, it investigates smart learning in smart cities, which extends the concept of smart learning to cover both formal and informal learning, and to support life-long learning.With digital technologies and the Internet becoming increasingly integrated into learning, the demand for smart learning has grown steadily, especially in smart city scenarios. Higher Education Reform in China
A major transformation of Chinese higher education (HE) has taken place over the past decade - China has reshaped its higher education sector from elite to mass education with the number of graduates having quadrupled to three million a year over six years. China is exceptional among lower income countries in using tertiary education as a development strategy on such a scale, aiming to improve the quality of its graduates, and make HE available to as many of its citizens as possible. This book provides a critical examination the challenges to the development and sustainability of higher education in China: Can its universities move from quantity to quality? How will so many graduates find jobs in line with their expectations? Can Britain and other western countries continue to benefit from China's education boom? What are the prospects for collaboration in research? This book evaluates the prospects for Chinese and foreign HE providers, regulators and other stakeholders. It introduces the key changes in China's HE programme since the Opening-Up policy in 1978 and analyses the achievements and the challenges over the subsequent three decades. Furthermore, it sheds light on new reforms that are likely to take place in the future, particularly as a result of the ongoing international financial crisis.
Srategy and performance of knowledge flow : university-industry collaborative innovation in China
This book constructs a model of the knowledge value chain in the university and analyzes the university knowledge value-added mechanism in the process of Industry-University Collaborative Innovation. The efficiency of university knowledge value-added of Provinces in China is measured. The book illustrates the operating mechanism between enterprise subsystems and college subsystems in the collaborative innovation system, and establishes a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model with parallel decision making units to assess the performance of Industry-University Collaboration Innovation in China by considering the complex internal structure of the collaborative innovation system. The book also addresses various behaviors of knowledge agents in the knowledge sharing process.
Higher Educational Institutions’ Digital Transformation and the Roles of Digital Platform Capability and Psychology in Innovation Performance after COVID-19
Digital technologies have transformed business models quickly, making sustainable, inventive performance essential for the survival of businesses, particularly in emerging markets. However, a lot of English educational institutions struggle to make use of digital platform capability (DPC) due to a lack of funding, resources, and experience that stifles prospects for advanced innovation. After the COVID-19 pandemic, this study suggests a framework to investigate how English educational institutions might improve their innovation performance using DPC. The study examines the relationship between digital innovation (DI) and innovation performance (IP), as well as the moderating effects of digital technology (DT). This study uses a quantitative methodology and questionnaire survey with 435 respondents from institutions that support DPC. The analysis examines the hypotheses using correlations, regression analyses, and 5000 bootstraps. The results demonstrate a positive relationship between DPC and IP, with DI acting as a mediator. Additionally, the outcomes show that the development of digital technology strengthens the positive influence of DPC on innovation performance. Through filling research gaps, this study adds to the body of knowledge. It also has significant management implications for English educational institutions looking to improve their innovation performance by fostering digital platform ability and digital innovation.
Top management team functional diversity and organizational innovation in China: The moderating effects of environment
While conflicts (cognitive and affective) have been considered as important process variables to better understand the mixed findings on the relationship between top management team functional diversity and organizational innovation, such an input-process-outcome model is still incomplete without considering the environmental factors. This study was formulated to assess the importance of both competitive and institutional environments in moderating such upper echelon effects within a transition economy. The chief executive officers and chief technology officers of 122 Chinese firms were surveyed and both competitive uncertainty and institutional support were found to shape top management team decision making processes and their outcomes.
Innovations in an institutionalised higher education system
This paper explores how a novel university governance model at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), largely learned from the West, has been implemented in the highly institutionalised and centralised Chinese higher education system. For this purpose, we first constructed an analytical framework, integrating the conceptualisation of an innovation process in higher education and the concept of embedded agency. This framework was then applied to analyse eight interviews, seven policy documents and six news media reports in our empirical investigation of the case university. Our major research findings are: the governance model adopted by SUSTech was a disruptive innovation and it was mostly challenged by the incompatibility between the norms around the governance model and the institutional context of Chinese higher education; this challenge was mitigated through three agency strategies, labelled by the metaphors of new wine in a new bottle, new wine in an old bottle and old wine in a new bottle. Successfully implementing these strategies calls on the visions, skills of playing power games and social capital of those initiating the innovation. Finally, we discuss the theoretical contribution and practical implications of the study in the conclusion.
Exploring the new model of medical innovation and entrepreneurship talent training based on biodesign in eastern China
With the trend of economic globalization, innovation and entrepreneurship have become critical strategies for national development. College students, particularly, are a primary focus for cultivating awareness of innovation and entrepreneurship, which is essential for implementing national development strategies. The institution in eastern China has developed a program aimed at fostering medical innovation and entrepreneurship through the Biodesign framework. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of this training system by surveying 479 medical students using a questionnaire designed around three stages: “identify,” “invent,” and “implement”. Factor analysis, descriptive statistical analysis, and T-tests were employed to assess the effectiveness and development pathways of the Biodesign-based cultivation of medical innovation and entrepreneurship talents. The results indicate significant improvements in students’ abilities in demand identification, demand screening, concept generation, concept selection, strategic identification, and business planning ( p  < 0.001), with the most notable improvement in demand identification (t = 6.383). Additionally, students have achieved notable success in writing and publishing papers and patents, as well as securing provincial and national-level awards. Particularly remarkable were the achievements in student competitions, with the number of national-level awards rising from 32 in 2019 to 66 in 2023. In conclusion, the Biodesign-based cultivation model for medical innovation and entrepreneurship has proven effective and merits further promotion among medical students.
Systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis on virtual reality and education
The objective of this study is to identify and analyze the scientific literature with a bibliometric analysis to find the main topics, authors, sources, most cited articles, and countries in the literature on virtual reality in education. Another aim is to understand the conceptual, intellectual, and social structure of the literature on the subject and identify the knowledge base of the use of VR in education and whether it is commonly used and integrated into teaching–learning processes. To do this, articles indexed in the Main Collections of the Web of Science, Scopus and Lens were analyzed for the period 2010 to 2021. The research results are presented in two parts: the first is a quantitative analysis that provides an overview of virtual reality (VR) technology used in the educational field, with tables, graphs, and maps, highlighting the main performance indicators for the production of articles and their citation. The results obtained found a total of 718 articles of which the following were analyzed 273 published articles. The second stage consisted of an inductive type of analysis that found six major groups in the cited articles, which are instruction and learning using VR, VR learning environments, use of VR in different fields of knowledge, learning processes using VR applications or games, learning processes employing simulation, and topics published during the Covid-19 pandemic. Another important aspect to mention is that VR is used in many different areas of education, but until the beginning of the pandemic the use of this so-called “disruptive process” came mainly from students, Institutions were reluctant and slow to accept and include VR in the teaching–learning processes.

Research on the indicator system of scholarship of teaching and learning ability for medical teachers in the context of new medical science—based on the grounded theory method
Background The Scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) is one of the four types of scholarship proposed by Boyer, who emphasized that universities should approach teaching as scholarly work. Studies show that SoTL is an effective tool to improve teaching effectiveness and safeguard educational quality. Enhancing medical teachers’ SoTL ability is crucial for improving medical education quality and cultivating innovative medical talents, which directly support New Medical Science construction and ensures the smooth implementation of the Healthy China strategy. However, systematic research on medical teachers’ SoTL ability remains limited in China. This study aimed to construct an indicator system of SoTL ability for medical teachers to facilitate evaluation and improvement. Methods Based on the Grounded Theory method, 20 teachers were interviewed and data were analyzed via NVivo11 to develop a preliminary indicator system. 19 experts then validated the indicator system through Delphi method consultations. SPSS 26.0 was employed to statistically analyze the data to finalize the indicator system of SoTL ability. Results The second-round expert consultation achieved 100% response and validity rates. The expert authority coefficient (Cr = 0.88) and coordination coefficient of importance (W > 0.4, p -value < 0.05,) confirmed strong consensus. The final indicator system was constructed by retaining indicators with a mean score ≥ 4 and a coefficient of variation < 25%, comprising 5 primary indicators, 15 secondary indicators, and 31 tertiary indicators. Conclusion An indicator system of SoTL ability for medical teachers was constructed to provide theoretical and practical references for evaluating and exploring paths to enhance their SoTL ability.
