تناول المؤلف أعلام الرحالة المسلمون في العصور الوسطى التي تعد العصور المظلمة لدى الغرب. يبدأ المؤلف من حقبة القرن الثاني هجريا / الثامن ميلاديا إلى القرن الثامن هجريا / الرابع عشر ميلاديا، ويذكر الرحالة والجغرافيون المسلمون خلال ذلك الوقت من الذين جالوا أقطار وأمصار الأرض، المشهورون منهم وحتى الذين لم نسمع عنهم بعد. يذكر تراجيمهم موجزة مما وصلنا، وطرق رحلاتهم وأسماء كتبهم والمخطوطات من من حققوها والتي لم تحقق بعد وأماكن تواجدها مستحضرا ما نهب أو أتلف أو فقد منها بلسان حال الرحالة أنفسهم. ويشير على اختلاف أساليب الرحالة في السرد والإسهاب والوصف والدقة في تدوين ما شاهدوه من مناظر طبيعية ومباني وملبس، شاملا وصف عاداتهم وتقاليدهم وفنونهم وحياتهم السياسية والتجارية. فيقتبس بعض نصوص الرحالة المدونة ويعلق عليها إما بتحليل أو ربط أو إعجاب أو شرح لبعض الكلمات ذات أصول غير عربية كانت متداولة عند بعض الرحالة.
