هذه المحاضرات كانت في الأصل دروسا شفهية قدمها عبد السلام، أحد مؤسسي الجامعة التونسية في باريس عام 1981 بطلب من المستشرق الشهير أندري ميكال، وقدم خلالها عبد السلام قراءات ابن خلدون قديما وحديثا. يضم الكتاب 4 فصول، اهتم في الأول بكتاب (بدائع السلك) لابن الأزرق وهو من أهل الأندلس تولى القضاء في غرناطة وأقام بين القاهرة وتلمسان وتونس، وهو أول من درس ابن خلدون ومقدمته في فلسفة الحكم. وخصص الفصل الثاني لقراءات المستشرقين لابن خلدون من القرن الـ 19 حتى القرن الـ 20، في حين تضمن الثالث قراءات المؤلفين العرب في القرن الـ 19 وبداية القرن الـ 20، ويضم الأخير قراءات من النصف الثاني من القرن الـ 20.
