ربيع أسود\" هو الكتاب الثاني في الترتيب الزمني من بين مؤلفات هنري مللر. \"مدار السرطان\" كان الأول وصدر في عام 1934، ثم \"ربيع أسود\" الذي صدر في عام 1936 وأخيرا \"مدار الجدي\" في عام 1939. الرمايات الثلاث تعبر ثلاثية بصورة ما. ف \"مدار السرطان\" يحكي فيه ميللر عن جوانب فيحياته في مدينة نيويورك. و\"مدار الجدي\" تحدث فيه عن تجربته في مدينة باريس، خلال سنوات تسكعه ومحاولة إثبات ذاته كأديب. أما \"ربيع أسود\" فهو وسط بينهما. إنه ليس رواية بالمعنى التقليدي للكلمة، فهو سردا تقليديا لجوانب من سيرته الشخصية، بل فصول يستعرض ميللرمن خلالها طاقته في الكتابة الإبداعية. إنها طاقة فريدة لا تشبه تجربة أي كاتب قبله ويكشف فيها عن قدرته على تحويل السيرة الذاتية إلى فصول شعرية غاضبة وساخرة مما يفعله المجتمع بمبدعه وعباقرته إذا لم يعوا أنفسهم ذاتيا ويعتمدوا على رعاية عبقريتهم بأنفسهم.
